Although this is primarily a historical museum, and an outstandingly good one, it is also home to many great works of art, from the Middle Ages into the 17th century. The collection of German painting and sculpture -- Riemenschneider, Cranach, Duerer, Atldorfer, Bruyn, etc. -- is particularly good, but there are also some fine works from other countries, notably the northern Netherlands, with a fine early self-portrait by Rembrandt. I highly recommend this museum.

Had a day off from business trip and took a trip to the museum. On the main strip of Downtown Nuremberg the maps on the street and the unique building make it easy to find if you walk into town.

During my visit they had a Albert Durer exhibit which was one of a kind. Albert Durer is a famous artist from Nuremberg so I got to see works of his that were not travelling to the U.S.
They have a beautiful Garden Hall, weaponry collection and much more. The gift shop is also a must stop. I was ale to pick up a lot of wonderful souvenirs for my family that you could not pick p anywhere else in town. If you have a free afternoon this is a must stop.

It was my first museum visit in Germany and I had enjoyed it a lot, the best experience for me in Nuremberg.
Nice and interesting medieval collection, don't miss out the armory and weapons section and as others pointed out, you can easily lose your way in the museum and find yourself running cirlcles around the same area.
Two hours should be enough for your visit and they have lockers room.

A big museum with lots of exhibits. Some are a little dated, but others are obviously recently renewed. The (temporary) exhibit on Crafts and Guilds was excellent as was the (permanent) exhibit about medieval cities.

We left exhausted and knew we could never do this museum justice in a single visit. We spent five hours listening to the excellent English language audio guide and wandering through the fabulous museum with exhibits from pre and ancient history that were simply amazing -- to arts and culture of the 20th century. A must do in Nuremberg amongst so many excellent place and things to see. We learned so much!
