“Perfect for Christmas markets”
Reviewed December 13, 2011

We found this hotel on Expedia and booked as the price was right. But it worked well for us. We had booked an economy room but were allocated one of the appartment rooms with small kitchen and sleeping area. (Though there were no plates or cutlery so we couldn't really make use of it.) The hotel is on a fairly quiet street. There are some food shops (Lidl and a bakery) nearby so if you do want to avoid 16 euro pp breakfast you can do it yourself easily enough. The hotel is about 15 - 20 minutes walk from the Aldstadt. We found a lovely restaurant severing Bavarian food just round the corner (Kartofel Restaurant.) Worth checking out.

Room Tip: If you can get an appartment room it's worth it

Maybe we just had bad timing. We had been on a hot train all day long and then we arrived at the hotel. We arrived and realized the hotel had no A/C. We sat in their restaurant which had A/C for a while. When we went our room, it was hot. There was no fan. We opened up the door to the balcony to get a little air but there was nothing to circulate it. In the middle of the night a storm came in and the temperature dropped, which helped little on the indoor temp.

Anyways, other than that we had a great stay. The breakfast was one of the best we had and the service was perfect. We had never been to Nuremberg. The staff went out of their way to tell us what to see before we set off.

We had booked a superior room. I was expecting one that had a divider between the sleeping area and living space but the first room they gave us did not have it. When I pointed it out, I was given the choice of other rooms. The rooms on the 4th floor are nice and large with separated kitchen area and sleeping area. Bed was very comfortable. But there is no air conditioning or windows so can get quite warm in the summer, unless you open the door to the balcony. There was free on-street parking which wasn't difficult to find. A Lidl and Norma are across the street which were very convenient for grocery shopping. We were relatively close to the castle and St. Sebald's Church. Would definitely recommend for families.

Room Tip: Try to get upper floor suites

While the main appeal is for business travelers, the Derag Maximillian is certainly fine for Nuremberg tourists. The Altstadt is a 15-minute walk or five-minute Ubahn ride away, where you have all the attractions and food Nuremberg offers.

It's not in an area surrounded by posh shopping -- the neighborhood is office/industrial, with a LIDL market catercorner from the hotel for food and a Mueller less than two blocks away for personal-care items. Restaurant choices are a bit limited; the hotel's dining is good, but doesn't give you many of the local specialities (which you'll find in abundance in the Altstadt). There are a couple of Imbiss and doner kebab joints close by -- and pretty good food for the price.

Rooms aren't fancy, but certainly kept-up and, with my double, roomy even by American standards. The Internet is a one-hour-free per day thing and fairly expensive after that, at €13 per day -- if your'e there more than two days, a €30 weekly deal is a good choice. (The idea of "free WiFi" in Europe is about as rare as "free coffee," so get used to it.)

The breakfast buffet is good, with a large selection of cold items and several versions of hot scrambled eggs. If it's included in the rate, it's a deal; if not, it's a consideration if you like a big breakfast in a nice pavilion with excellent table service.

One other thing -- you get a real key, not a keycard. And, no, you don't have to hand it over to the desk staff when you leave the building ... just when you check out.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the indoor courtyard

The hotel has a good location - within 10 min walk from city center and a big supermarkt nearby. The district itself is quite shabby but we had no problem with that. Rooms are spacious, there is a little kitchen set, but no table big enough to eat anything (in good weather you can use balcony which goes to a little nice yard). Very comfortable beds. For those interested in wireless internet - you have one hour a day for free, but don't count on high speed. The hotel is easy to reach - an underground station is only 5 minutes away. For the price they offer in advance it is a value for money.

The hotel is fine for a short stay but for any longer I would not recommend the self catering apartments. The kitchenette units are tiny and you really would struggle to prepare any kind of meal given the lack of equipment/crockery/cutlery. The kitchenette unit did not have the basics that you would expect to find. For example no toaster, no potato peeler, no frying pan, no corkscrew to name but a few.
In summary I would say that this is an ok hotel to stay in if you don't mind a 10 to 15 minute walk to the town centre and if you are planning on eating out most evenings. It is definitely not a family friendly hotel, particularly if you have young children.
