A&O Nurnberg Hauptbahnhof
Reviewed February 1, 2013 via mobile

Stayed for toy fair. so in fairness we are not the typical target market for this hotel. It's a combined hostel and budget hotel and quite acceptable for that.
Good points
Clean
Friendly young staff
Good central location
Internally quiet
Fresh and good breakfast

You'll probably find the front rooms noisy especially on the lower floors with 4 lanes of ring road traffic, buses and trams ( which shake the building ) as they rumble past.

All staff seem very young and this caused one consistent problem. Either they are not trained on the checkin system or it's impossible to use. But our check in even with voucher took 30monutes and there were what we thought of as frequent panic and phone calls to 'Berlin' to ask how to check various people in. We saw this happening every night as they struggled to find rooms to match bookings.

Also not really suitable for families as our party saw open drug taking in the roof top bar. Again perhaps the all young staff or local laws mean this is acceptable but we felt uncomfortable in that environment.

Lastly although we felt the hotel inside was quiet is was midweek and mainly filled with business people from toy fair this might not always be the case!

We stayed here for a few days over Christmas time. We were traveling with our two older children, 19 & 21 years old. We first stayed in room #220, it was clean, but sparse. No television, but do you really need one, we did not care. The room was large enough for us. Two twin beds pushed together with bunk beds. The only problem I had was that there are no locks on the inside of the rooms. The only issue was it was warm enough to open a window for fresh air, yet the noise of the train station and traffic outside was a little noisy. We came back to Nuremberg and stayed in room #432. It was much smaller, but quieter, and it had a small television.

The staff at the hotel/hostel were very friendly and helpful. The towels were a little rough. You had to pay 5 Euros for each device for Internet in your room; internet is free in the lobby.

You cannot beat the location; so close to the inner old city sites. You walk out the main train station, Hauptbahnhof, turn right, walking past the line of Taxis, walk just past the Post Office and cross the street. Then walk still to the right (you will see a U-Bahn entrance), keep walking about 2 short blocks, and there it is on the left side.

We stayed here in December 2012 for the Christmas Market and the price was way to high for the value but that happens all over Nuremburg so that is not the hotel's fault. This is a hostel/hotel so there is a young crowd that predominates. Overall, the price was our room was still much cheaper than what you would find in or near Old Town. We called ahead to reserve a car parking space behind the hotel (there are only 7-8 spaces and it is tight). The elevator was broken the day we were there so we had to haul luggage up those which was not fun. The room was a family room (quad) which had two twin beds pushed together and a bunk bed for the kids. There was limited walking space in the room. The room was definitely worn as it had scuff marks around almost every wall and the drapes didn't fully cover the windows. The towels were thin but the front desk readily supplied more upon request. There is a fee for Wi-Fi which worked fine. There is also a breakfast for a fee. There are tons of breakfast type places at the train station nearby (Burger King, McDonalds, pastry and cafe, etc).

My bed was so thin/old, I could feel the springs. Thankfully, I can sleep on pretty much anything but I don't think the feeling of springs through the mattress would appeal to many.

The location of this hotel was great. It is literally just minutes away from the entrance to the old town of Nuremburg which was an easy walk. This is the hotels best quality.

This is a budget hotel so do not have any high expectations. It meets the basic needs of a place to sleep and shower at a great location.

Yes, it is very simple. There are no frills, and it's nothing special. But for what you pay, what would you expect?

We stayed in a private room for two to visit the Christmas Markets, and it was exactly what we needed.

At the end of the day this place is clean, friendly and in a great spot, particularly if you are travelling by train. It's two minutes walk from the hauptbahnhof, and 10 minutes walk from the beautiful old city. The staff were great, and the upstairs bar is a cool place to chill out (and, in our case, warm up after a long night of standing around outside).

My only criticism is that the breakfast is a little over-priced, but there's a very simple solution to that problem; walk into town and eat somewhere else. Easy!

I have to say that I would totally recommend this place to anyone travelling on a budget and looking for somewhere clean and easy to stay. Great hotel/hostel.

I've stayed here three times in the last two months, once in a shared quad hostel dorm room and twice in a private double room.

The rooms are no-frills, minimally decorated but clean & well maintained. Each room (regardless if it a dorm or private room) has its own bathroom and towels are provided – this is a big bonus in my opinion – the bathrooms were spotlessly clean and well maintained and it actually felt more like a shared hotel room rather than a hostel dorm.
The wifi is limited to use in the reception area downstairs, unless you have booked a private room, then you given a 24hr password to access the wifi from your room. Hot and cold drinks and snacks are available from reception 24/7 and there is a restaurant on the top floor that I didn’t try.

The biggest disappointment was the staff. On each occasion there was a massive queue to check-in, despite completing the form on arrival each time (& providing a booking reference) – it seemed to take a millennium for the staff to find our details on their booking system.
The staff almost seemed more content to talk amongst themselves than deal with customers. On one visit I had gone up to my room to find there were no linen or towels and had to return downstairs to collect it.
Another occasion I was placed into a room with three males when I know there were other dorm rooms with only female guests that were not completely booked up. (I know they don’t specify gender only rooms and normally I wouldn’t bother – but the dorm rooms are the same size as the double rooms (ie/cosy) and the beds are also extremely close together). This might sound small - but it's an oversight the staff should have noted.
On the same stay I asked for taxi to be booked for 4am (and double checked with the receptionist to be informed sternly that it had been booked...) 4:15am and no taxi – I had to ask the night clerk to call again.

This hotel is very affordable (especially if you book in advance!) and it’s a great location – it has the potential to be an outstanding hotel/hostel if they could provide their staff with better training and strengthen their customer relation skills.

The room was clean enough but I guess it should have been as we were made to wait beyond check in time for them to finish cleaning it. We arrived early and checked our bags into luggage storage and were told to return at 3 to check in. When we returned at twenty past we got our packs it but were told our room still wasn't ready. We waited almost an hour more before beig able to check in as they could only provide the estimate of 15min to an hour as a time frame for when we could get into the room. Fine except they were quite abrupt about it and we were exhausted and cold and wanting showers and some down time.

When we got to our room which was meant to be a four bed dorm we discovered it was actually I'm fairly sure a family room with on double bed and a bunk bed squeezed into a tiny space. We had no Ida which beds were ours and assumed the bunk beds. However we ended up having two male roommates who claimed the bunks which left me and my make, I'm female, traveling buddy to share the double which was awkward for everyone, especially our unsuspecting roommates who didn't speak English and thought we were a couple.

The awkwardness was a major drawback to our stay. Also the room was very loud with drafts causing he door to some frequently throughout the night as it didn't fully latch even in the locked position.

Not worth the money paid for the awkward dorm situation and being ignored by reception.

This place is definitely more of hostel than a hotel...they offer both dormitories and private en-suite rooms. I stayed in a private room which definitely retained the "hostel" feeling.

First, the good: It was cheap. I was there for four nights for a total of about 200 euro, and this during the height of tourist season. This rate included wifi in my room, but not breakfast. I had reserved a single room but the room had a double bed, which was nice. The location can't be beat (although see below re: noise from trains) as it is easy to find, and only 5 mins. from the main train station (with U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus services) and a mere 10 min. walk to the very heart of the Nuremberg old city. The room was pretty clean, and offered a few extras like a hairdryer and towel warming rack in the bathroom.

The negatives: It is across the street from the train tracks and the building is not very soundproofed. Earplugs are recommended. The furnishings are very bare bones; for example, there was a rack to hang clothes but no hangers! The walls were really heavily scuffed from previous occupants' suitcases. Also, there were thin curtains, but no blinds...wait, I take that back! There were blinds built onto the exterior of the window, as is often the case in Germany, but the cord to open/close them was also just outside the window. However, the window only tilted open (as opposed to swinging) so you could not access the cord. So it is very, very bright in the mornings, especially if you are street side (facing south).

If you are fine with a place that is absolutely no frills, with good location and easy access to transit, then this hostel fits the bill.

Room Tip: Request a room at the back of the building (north side) as that is probably quieter.
