“Good value”
Reviewed June 18, 2014

We stayed at Zum Schwaenlein during the last week of May 2014 for 4 nights. This is a small one star hotel with a very typical look to it. There has not been much if any change in the hotel interiors for many years now, I know as I have been staying here since 2002.

The room we had was on the first floor facing the small garden at the back. Though comfortable it was on the small side, the stairs leading up are quite steep and if you have heavy luggage it may be quite an effort. The housekeeping was good and rooms are cleaned everyday with fresh bed linen changed every two nights.

One complaint I had was that the beds were placed extremely low and were difficult to get into and out off.

The breakfast is quite good and has a good mix of breads, cheese and cold cuts. A choice of beverages both hot and cold are also available.

The owners Michael and Ilona also run a very popular restaurant serving up hearty local fare which is both tasty and wholesome.

The hotel is at a great location, a very short walk from the Hauptbahnhof (main station) and on a quiet street right inside the old city walls.

All the popular old town sights and restaurants are located within a kilometer or so from the Hotel and its very convenient to walk around the old city from this location. A lot of shopping opportunities are also available near by with a large departmental store 'Muller' located within 2 minutes from the hotel.

Considering the room tariff, the location & facilities are quite adequate and if you do not have too many great expectations, this will be just the place to stay in while at Nuremberg.

On the + side : Central location. Good breakfast for the price. Quiet (although in a night life neighbourhood, but we were in january).
Rooms, quite small but neat and clean. The bed could be more confortable though.

On the - side : How to say ? A hotel should either be opend or closed. Not something inbetween. Or at least when it is an "inbetween" situation, prices should be low . Whe had booked one single and one triple room. On the sign outside prices state : Single room 28 EUR and Double 48 EUR.
We had booked (and had to pay an advance) the single 34 EUR and the Triple 75 EUR so more than full price. The single had a toilett in corridor but NO shower (it was agreed we would use the triple room bathroom) so we felt a bit ripped off to pay 34 instead of 28 for the single in such conditions. Then the triple room ...A double is 48 we paid 75..so no discount at all, and it was by no way a proper/real triple... one double bed and a very very basic couch! (see pictures)

The hotel was obviously empty, everything was dark. During breakfast only one part of the room was lighted up.We were welcome by a lady who was nice but obviously not from the hotel and obviously only there to give the key.

So we left with the feeling we were not so welcomed ... So once again : an hotel should be closed or open. For us it was half open but full priced.

Sorry, but it must be a misunderstanding! Our rooms come in three different categories. This 28,- and 48,- EUR (special rates, normaly it is 30,- and 50,- EUR) rooms are attic rooms, situated in the 3. floor, with washbasin only / sharing shower and toilet, for three people.`'Your' rooms - for four people - were situated in the 1. floor, the tripple with bathroom (shower & toilet in the room) and the single room was in the 1. floor too, with washbasin only, but with a separate toilet, for this room only, just one step from you door. That's the difference ... Because of the Holidays, we have been to skiing to Austria for five days, with our daughter - it is the only possibility, because of the school. We are sorry, that we were not able to personally wellcome you! My mother gave you the keys, sorry, but she's old and doesn't speak any english. Thank you for understanding!

We stayed in this guesthouse for one night in December. The room was typical of many European guest houses. We had 2 adults and 2 kids, but only needed a place to sleep so it was more than adequate.

The owners were exceptional though. We came in late and that was not a problem. The exceptional thing was that the owners left some Christmas treats for our kids. After a long train ride, that was such a joy for the kids.

My husband and I stayed here for a short weekend and we both disliked our choice of B&B. The beds were uncomfortable, when i requested some new towels the guy told me that it was not the Hilton. Then in the restaurant (which is also run by the guesthouse owners) we were treated in a very rude way by one of the waitress. I would never recommend anyone to this place.

We booked this Pension at rather a last minute - and were so pleasantly surprised by the accommodation. The Pension has been upgraded, rooms compact but suited us fine, sound proof windows, little TV, and gasthof adjacent. Upon arriving rather late in the afternoon, we enjoyed a superb meal at the gasthof, left our luggage and went our to explore Nurnberg. Breakfast was enjoyable, they stored our luggage for us while we visited the Deutsche Museum and the Dokumentation Center - and it was a very good value. Email goes a bit better if you speak some German - but they were all helpful and kind.

Room Tip: Location is great - inside the walled city, close enough to the train station to walk over, deposit...

This guesthouse turned out to be a good value of money, having a great location, especially for those who plan also to visit by train nearby cities and towns, still it is very close to the city center. I know there are rooms without bathroom, we had kind of the most expensive one and it was quite comfy, even if rather small (except that the bed wasn't double as requested but two single beds put together). The place is very quiet and we had good rest at night (the room faced the yard and the medieval wall). Breakfast is quite modest, but we didn't expect much, the only negative moment - breakfast is only till 9 am, and at times we were simply too tired to have it that early.
Can't say anything of Wi-fi, as strangely, we have never tried it.
We appreciated also small presents left for us in the room, it contributed to our Christmas mood :)
Generally, we've enjoyed it, and would recommend to all who are used to stay in B&B or guesthouses - Schwanlein is a nice place, there's also a restaurant in the ground floor (which can cause some noise heard in the room).

Room Tip: We stayed in the first floor (there are rooms also in the 3rd floor), room N3, it's with a bathr...

Room Tip: Don't know if rooms to the other side of hotel are bit more quiete ours facet to the Hintere Ste...
