We came by this restaurant while strolling towards English Garden after touring Marienplatz and the adjacent farmers market. It's location right across the square from the national theater, opera house and the Residenz museum made it an ideal spot to got a sidewalk table to people watch. The beer was refreshingly cold and the freshly baked apple strudel was heavenly!

We had a table reserved for 20h00 with some local friends from Munich who described this as their favorite traditional restaurant.

After ordering, & the waitress accepting our order, we were told the following was out of stock/no longer available :-
Veal balls with cognac sauce;
Veal balls with salad;
Crispy pork.

We then changed the order from the Crispy Pork to Suckling pig, & the Veal Balls to Wiener Schnitzel. After accepting this order, the waitress returned to advise there was no more Suckling Pig !!

We then changed the Suckling Pig to Wiener Schnitzel which took almost an hour to arrive & was awful.

We were advised that the Manager was too busy to see us.

However on the way out Mr Erwerth ( the Manager ) was there - & quite frankly he is better suited to a job in the traffic police.

We will never, ever go there again & will advise all who may listen to avoid it.

I'm a Munich local living abroad. This time I was back in town visiting with friends who are in Munich for the first time. I took them to Spaten claiming this was my favorite Bavarian restaurant and I now wish I hadn't said anything and just gone somewhere else... We arrived at 8pm just to find out that we were "too late" and they had run out of basically all Bavarian dishes. Roast pork, duck, chicken, haxn, you name it, they didn't have it. After ordering 3 times and getting the news that our food wasn't available, we decided on some schnitzel and pasta and soup as starter. The soup was good, the main course took 45 minutes to arrive and to be nice, it was just average. In fact the schnitzel was dry, overcooked and just bad. However this was not the worst part. After telling the waitress, she asked whether we would like to speak to manager, to which we said yes. The waitress returned to inform us the manager was too busy and not interested in speaking to us. We then ordered the bill, which took another 15 minutes. At this time the manager arrived but was not approaching our table and trying to hide. Once we approached him to tell him what's going on, he replied in a rude way that he was not responsible and asking us "what am I supposed to do? This happens all the time. I'm not the head chef, this is not my problem!"... He then proceeded to tell us that "you booked your table at 8 and arrived late at 8:30 (not true nor relevant)". Just a farce! Never had such a terrible reaction by a manager... He offered us a coffee... I'm still laughing, you missed the point my friend. Point is that my once favorite restaurant is now one of the most shocking and embarrassing restaurant experiences I've ever had! There are plenty of good restaurants in Munich that will cost you less than 220€ for 4 people and treat you better... Don't go there!

Walked up at 8pm on a Saturday. Was immediately seated outside, where we wanted to sit. Server was prompt and friendly. Food was excellent. I lived in Bavaria for 5 years when I was younger. I can honestly say this food is on point. The people seated behind me weren't friendly, and didn't realize I spoke German. But the waiter overheard the, too. He made sure we were taken care of before the others.

So we took some friends traveling from the States and sat inside, because there were no free tables outside. That would have been worth it, because at least you have wonderful views of the Opera. Instead we dined on so-so Bavarian food and then received a bill with 2 extra beers on the tab. I'd like to think that was carelessness and not an opportunity to take advantage of tourists. So, great place for having a drink out on the terrace, just make sure you check your bill.
