Visiting Munich often, I decided to bring an American friend to this place as I was told it was typically Bavarian but the quality a notch higher than many of its more commercial peers. The food was decent but I was shocked when the waiter told me I could not use my eurozone debit card / Bancomat card. Like any other place, he should have simply stuck the card with the chip into the card reader and make me put in the digits. No way. He said they dont have it and simply proceeded swiping my bank card as if it was a credit card. Frustrated by the apparent lack of this entirely normal payment technology in one of Munich's most prominent restaurants in 2016, I proceeded to give the waiter a credit card. Now he was happy! He swiped the card, I signed and went to the toilet. When I came back, the waiter, who spoke with an eastern European or even turkish accent, came up to me and showed me the bill again, pointing his finger at the part of the bill where it says "Tip". I informed him that this is not the USA and tipping in Europe is optional. He insisted that I paid him a tip because perhaps its not normal where I am from but it is "entirely" normal in Germany to tip generously, especially because he was "on minimum wage". I could not believe my ears...I was so flabberghasted that I gave in without much discussion and gave him cash. At the time I thought it was crazy but even now looking back, I am still in shock. He was, of course, entirely wrong and tipping is NOT standard in Germany. It is always optional. Perhaps he thought we were Americans as we were using English and thought he could con us. In any case, I will NOT be going back there. One, because it is ridiculous bank cards cannot be used (which I still dont believe is true and is in fact, a lie as bank cards have much lower transaction costs than credit cards!) and two, because the waiter forced me to pay a tip - absolutely disgusting behaviour. The establishment really needs to vet their staff better. They are the worst of the worst.
