“Seek and you shall find”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

Walter is a charming host. Whether you require a special bottle of wine to take away or wish to take a seat and sip a hard to get wine by the glass and stay for dinner - you will be made to feel welcome. Not a typical tourist place by any means. The food has received a welcome boost with a new chef from the Michelin starred Terrine - the food offering is superb and if you let Walter match your wines with the courses you choose then your dinner will be sublime. I would suggest either starting or finishing your meal with a cocktail at the close by Gamsei to ensure a perfect evening!

“Used to be better, yet still way above average”
Reviewed June 8, 2013

Been to this place quite a few times over the last couple of years. Always loved the service, the ambiance, the food (and never really loved the seats outside on the uneven pavement). This wine-bar offers a lot of wines per bottle and a couple of dozen per glass. Cuisine is not the main feature of Walter & Benjamin, I'd say. Yet they do a pretty good job at it. Mist admit I now find the pricing a bit too steep as compared to two or three years ago. Quality of food is still way above average though.

“An oasis of Wine in the city of Beer”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

This Winery-Restaurant (in that order) is a hidden-intimate-cozy-treasure-cave for the wine enthusiast. I don't like beer, which in a city like Munich (beer capital of Germany) equals to social ostracism and drinking dissatisfaction. Well, not quite. I think I can survive the next months at Walter & Benjamin. Here one can find mostly European wines and some treasures from the new world too. We had a lovely Argentine Malbec "Domiciano de Barrancas 2009" (night harvest) and some Mediterranean snacks: Bread, Olives and an assortment of cheeses for € 42. The saff knows the ropes. The wine bottle was quite warm (above cellar temperature) so after a polite note they immediately chilled it, pouring cooled wine in the decanter as soon as we emptied our glasses. The place is discreet and suitable for a good conversation or a romantic soiree. Last but not least, is Lederhosen-free.

“Very Relaxed Fine Dining”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

If Books Do Furnish A Room, Wine Bottles Do Furnish A Restaurant.
Walter and Benjamin is a wine store and restaurant. Evenings are usually full, reservations impossible unless you're a friend of the family. Food is usually excellent (there are exceptions when reserve chefs try their best if someone is ill or on holiday).

And then there is the delightful occasion when a guest chef appears. Last night was one, when a star chef guest cooked for the week, so you know the place is well connected to the culinary scene. The sommelier, Christophe, is among the best in town (as well as charming).
The pheasant in grape sauce was a grand starter, as was the seared salmon, but the triumph of the evening was a deer fillet in red beets, prunes and port sauce paired with a Chateau neuf du Pape. Simply superb, it relegated a wonderful wild boar with sauerkraut and chorizo to the shadows.

Although service is relaxed and friendly, it is also impeccable - like eating at home with staff on hand, and having a superb wine cellar to boot.
There are not many tables so get there either early (18:00 - 19:00) or late.

“Find this restaurant”
Reviewed June 22, 2012

So many places to choose, but if you want to escape the wonders of the local beer - let the staff guide you through their wines by the glass or choose one of the fantastic wines they offer by the bottle. I travel the world to eat, and you can really match wine to their wonderful food here. And even better, i operates as a wine shop and you can buy to take home with you. A really great experience. World class.
