As pretty much anyone else visiting this venue I couldn't, but noticed that it was really touristy. However, this doesn't seem to spoil the atmosphere - indeed, there are lots of different people (the place is huge!) and you can see Germans who come here all their life as easily as tourist groups with cameras - since most of the people come here to drink beer, no problem with that. The beer is good, the food is good, the service is good.
There is some advice, however - (i) you'll get better atmosphere if you go slightly inside and not settle right at the entrance and (ii) watch your stuff (still, too many people for a safe place).

Brilliant experience, great food, awesome beer. Very touristy, always packed, but if you can find some space on the end of a table it is a brilliant place to visit - no trip to Munich can be complete without it.

This is a huge beerhall which serves large steins. On our visit we didnt see many bar/pub type venues, most appear to be some form of restaurant, which doubles up as a 'beer hall'.

Hofbrauhaus is siding more towards serving beer, and is reasonably priced for beer.

We recently visited the HofBrauhous on our trip to Munich. Obviously, it is a huge and crowded tourist destination but if you have not been you really have to go at least once. I have been there several times on business trips but this is the first time I visited with my wife.

There are really three distinct parts of the place which was totally rebuilt after it was decimated in the war. By the way this is the first place after the main cathedral which was rebuilt - priorities in order in Germany! The main floor is the classic beer garden complete with band and great hostesses carrying 6 one liter steins at once. This is the place for the focused beer drinking experience. The second floor is a nicer restaurant that is set up for quitter lunches and dinners. This is actually a nice restaurant with good service. The food is average German fare but the atmosphere is great. The third floor is a classic German beer hall set up with long communal table and perfect for functions and festivals. It is pretty empty, however, unless it is Oktoberfest or one of the many days with festivals.

Food is average and the service is OK but given the crowds you never get the feeling that it is all that personal. There is great stuff to buy and the overall experience is priceless. As I said, everyone needs to go at least once but probably not often. Many more authentic and personal experiences in Munich.

Yes, we knew it Must be a tourist trap but since we were around the area, we decided to have our dinner here. First thing that hit me was the noise and chaos. Super pack with people, we were lucky to get a table almost immediately at the beerhall. I do feel it's the best area to be in (there's also courtyard, upstairs etc for different atmosphere), if you can overlook the noise, the beerhall is very cheery, puntuated with live 'traditional band' music, local seniors flaunting their wonderful traditional costumes....quite a sight!

As for the food, we had the crispy pork knuckle which was pretty good though I didn't like the accompanying potato dumpling. The salad with bacon bits and sauerkraut were yummy, the wool sausages and pretzels were so-so. Should have ordered the ubiquitous bratwurst, which I'm sure will enjoy much more..

I also note that each waiter is allocated to served a section of the hall. So dont waste your time flagging for waiters walking by if he's not placing beers/ food at your area. They wont even acknowledge you. Though we were served a very stressed looking waiter, he got everything right and served us promptly.

Overall, we had a good time there, would definitely come by if I'm back in Munich.
