I stayed here twice in June 2010 - once with a friend from Malaysia, and then again with my husband a few days later. For anyone staying in Munich, whether you are a first-timer or a frequent visitor, the location is good as it is close to multiple restaurants and bars in a friendly part of town. The rooms are by no means überluxurious (small tvs, no room service or complimentary fruit), but comfortable enough with period furniture adding to the atmosphere. My friend and I stayed in room 7 and it was fabulous! For disabled guests or those with a lot of luggage the hike up two flights of stairs may be strenuous. In terms of value for money it's good as far as Munich hotels are considered, but if you travel to other parts of Germany (e.g. Berlin) this place may seem a bit on the expensive side, but this is Munich for you!

My wife and I have stayed twice now at Pension Gärtnerplatz and have been happy both times. We absolutely love the breakfast there with its focus on high quality products, good coffee/espresso and a nice selection of breads, cheeses, meat, cereal, and fruits.

The rooms are very comfortable to stay in and are all decorated differently. There is definite character to the rooms and they don't feel generic at all. The bedding is also very comfortable. The hours that the reception is open is limited, but this is to be expected for such a small place and it's never hard to reach them via phone or email.

Overall, I would recommend this pension to many people -- certainly not those expecting the big business hotel type experience; but for those who enjoy a charming place to stay in a nice neighborhood with a friendly owner, I think this pension is hard to beat.

Also, internet speed for us in our 2010 visit was much improved over our 2009 visit. The speed is quite fast, so another plus for us as we relied on using Skype to contact our friends & family.

My partner and I stayed in the Pension for three nights recently on our first trip to Munich. We booked by email about a month in advance, easy as pie.

The Pension is very small and homey, and the proprietor is quite friendly. The location is excellent -- just half a block from an U-Bahn station, two blocks from the very charming Viktualienmarkt, and an easy walk to the center of Munich. And our room was decorated in a lovely art nouveau style.

Our only worry about the hotel was noise. It was warm when we were in Munich, so we kept the doors to our little balcony open. Our room overlooked the courtyard and a few cafes or restaurants share the same Hof, so there was a certain amount of noise early in the morning and late at night -- dropping glass bottles into a recycling bin from a height, for instance. And on at least one night (a Tuesday) there was over an hour of singing and carrying on from the street after midnight.

My husband and I stayed at the Pension for three nights in September. It was our first trip to Munich and we really enjoyed it. We were there for Fest and that was awesome too. The location of the Pension is outstanding. We got off the U-bahn after an overnight flight from the States and it was right across the street. No lugging suitcases through the streets...perfect! The Vitkualienmarkt was a few blocks away and was perfect for lunch. I still dream about the breakfast at the Pension. I think that would go back to Munich just for this breakfast. Andrea is a great hostess and very helpful with directions and tips for the city. All in all, this was a great choice. We will definately return and would highly recommend it for anyone traveling to Munich.

We stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed our stay. Excellent location, 1/2 block from a U Bahn stop, and walking distance to the old town, outdoor market, and Isar River sites. The hotel is on a lively street in the theatre district - meaning late night noise as well as early morning noise by delivery trucks, construction work, etc. Our room was simple and charming, very clean. Breakfasts were very good - eggs, meat & cheese, lovely breads, fresh fruit and juices. If you pack heavy or have difficulty with stairs, this is not the property for you - there is no elevator and you'll struggle up and down the stairs with your bags. We couldn't get access to the wireless network, so we visited a nearby internet coffee shop each day.

I looked at various reviews regarding this pension before i booked it. 75 euros is quite steep but I looked at the website and thought well this looks like a bit of luxury. I knew it was a risk but after seeing the reviews and looking at the website I decided I'll take it. I was wrong unfortunately. The pension is up 2 floors of stairs so if you are old or have problems in getting there that can be a problem. Secondly my room was basic. The tv functioned but some of the main German stations could not be received and there were lots of Italian porn channels. Strange!

I found that the daughter and mother were not very helpful with providing some information regarding the city. I don't know why. The breakfast was very ordinary. There was only 2 bread rolls, and one selection of meat and a couple pieces of cheese. Along of course with some brown bread, cerals, fruit juices and jams. However I stayed in 2 other places in German which were cheaper and had a much better experience. Overall I did not enjoy my stay in the pension and would not go back there.

1. The allegation that our rooms have Italian porn channels is definitely not true. We offer our guests Satellite Tv with 150 national and international channels that have free reception which is a standard procedure. We are not liable for the individual channels, eg. Italian porn channels.
2. The allegation that a mother and daughter work at the Pension, is also not true.
3. Our Pension is situated on the 1st and 2nd floor of a old historic house. We do not have an elevator. True.
4. Our breakfast is defined by fresh, high-quality, for the bigger part by organic products, eg. 2 different types of bread, 2 different cheese sorts, fresh cut ham, eg, muesli, fresh fruits, juice, joghurt, honey, 3 sorts of marmalades, coffee, tea, cappuccino, green tea....and so forth. We do not have pre-packed supermarket-quality foods. Sorry.

My husband and small son (8 weeks) stayed at the Pension am Gaertnerplatztheatre over a weekend. We booked directly with the property via email -- excellent English! Andrea Auer was incredibly accommodating. She gave us one of her larger rooms (yes, admittedly, small bathrooms. But if you want space, vacation in Montana!). We had a full-sized king bed, with room for our kiddo to sleep with us, though she did offer a baby-bed if we had wanted one. We hit *terrible* traffic coming from Stuttgart, turning a 2.5 hour trip into almost 6. Frau Auer did ask us to call about an hour out of town, and even though we didn't make it in until almost 10, she waited up for us and was still cheerful when we arrived, tired and hungry. Breakfasts are amazing! All of the food and drink comes from the region and is incredibly fresh and tasty (and filling). They will slice Schwarzwaldschinken on their shiny red hand-powered meat-slicer, right in the breakfast room. One of the best aspects of the pension (other than every other amazing thing) was the availability of parking. There is a private courtyard in which to park for only 7 euro/night. This was much preferred to the catch-as-catch-can street parking in the very hip neighborhoods around the Pension.
All in all, a great stay. We'll be back in the spring when the BMW museum reopens.
