Upon searching blogs for ideas for kids in Europe and Neuschwanstein castle, I found many recommendations for Mikes Bike tours and we are so glad that we went this way! The castle tour itself (by the state) was only 20 min and not very exciting (especially for our 4 and 9 year old). So, spending the day biking around a beautiful alpine lake, having lunch and riding the alpine slide, and then hiking the gorge up to the castle, absolutely made the trip worth it! We got amazing pictures of the scenery and the castle from the journey around and up to it, much better than we'd gotten if we just did the castle tour alone. We and our our kids, who are very active kids, had the best day ever! The guides Brad and Mikah were so nice and helpful. Brad was very knowledgeable about the history so we got more info from him than the boring tour:) This was one of our favorite activities in all of Europe and I would not hesitate to do it over again! Great family activity for those that are outdoorsy and active and best way to see the castle from every view!!!

This bike tour is mainly for people who want to make the most of only having a day in Munich. We got in midday the day before the bike tour and strolled around the city casually and essentially went everywhere this tour covers. Also, the first half of the tour barely requires biking. You go a block or so on the bike and then get off. The only advantage to the bike is that the English Gardens park is huge, so you can cover more area on the bike in a faster period of time. However, the part of the tour in the park is also walkable if you're not pressed for time. I would recommend renting a bike on your own and just biking the park at your leisure. Also, of we had not seen many of the sites already, we would have felt rushed, as there was little time for picture taking.

Our tour guide was ok, nothing to rave about, he was slightly annoying but very knowledgeable. The con is that the tour is relatively expensive for the area/what it covers, and then the tour guide requests gratuity at the end, which makes it feel even pricier for what you're getting.

In terms of ease, it's an easy bike ride at a slow pace along a flat route, and although the hill at the end is hard, it's very short, so walking the bike up it would be very manageable.

I thoroughly enjoyed this day trip with Mike's Bike Tours from Munich to the mountains of Bavaria to visit the magical Schloss Neuschwanstein. After a pleasant one hour and 40 minute bus trip south from Munich to Hohenschwangau, we are introduced to our local guide Brad Daynes and his wife Maaike. Then we choose a bike each from Brad's shed, and take a pleasant and easy bike ride around the beautiful area, including a circuit of the tiny Swan Lake. There are lots of opportunities to take photos of anything, including the frequent teasing views of the castle high above us in the distance. After the bike ride, we all (50 or so of us) adjourn to a nearby restaurant for a very good lunch. If the weather had been fine, at this stage we would have had fun on the "Alpine Slide", a sort of luge track, but as it is misty and damp the track is closed. Instead, Brad entertains us with his incredible magic tricks. He's a recognised magician and is very professional, as well as very funny. Finally we start our trek upwards through Waterfall Valley to the castle. The valley track is very steep, mostly steps, but is cool and interesting, with our first destination, Queen Marie's Bridge, frighteningly far above us. When we reach the top of the valley track, the view over the village of Hohenschwangau and the surrounding countryside and lakes is just stunning. A bit further on there is a view of the end of the castle, but when we finally reach Queen Marie's Bridge, suspended precariously between two vertical cliffs, the full frontal view of Schloss Neuschwanstein is breathtaking.
After many photos, we walk back down a short way to the castle itself. Brad has arranged internal tour tickets for us all and distributes them to us in the courtyard as we wait for our Government tour guide. Eventually our turn comes (number 501 for the day!) and a sour old German with the worst English pronunciation imaginable leads us through some of the 16 completed rooms of the 60-room castle. The decor and construction is amazing in its beauty and scale, and certainly its eccentricity. Despite the shortcomings of this particular guide, I recommend the inside tour as being well worth the discounted 13 Euros it costs through MBT. On leaving the castle, we gather with Brad, then walk back down to our tour bus, this time taking the easy road route. The bus trip back includes a video of Bavaria (I think), but most of us sleep until arrival in Munich.
Finally, I should point out that the bike ride is optional, and you can also opt to take a bus up to the castle instead of hiking up Waterfall Valley.
If you are going to be anywhere near this part of Germany in the spring or summer, I strongly suggest you contact Mike's Bike Tours and get yourself on a Neuschwanstein tour. You will never regret it or forget it.

One of the best tours ever. My husband and I haven't been on bikes in quite a few years, so we were a little apprehensive. But the trail is flat, and it's a nice easy bike ride around a beautiful lake with lots of views of the Castle and many stops along the way to take fabulous pictures. We had both Brad and Micah on our tour and they were the best. I was a little nervous about getting on a bike after many, many years, but Micah stayed back riding along to make sure I was ok and after 5 minutes, I was comfortable and riding like I had been on a bike yesterday. We also really liked that lunch was pre-ordered and waiting for us after the bike ride. There were lots of fun options following lunch including an Alpine slide ride. We really enjoyed the tour because it gave you a chance to spend some time enjoying the grounds around the Castle before finally making your way up to the Castle. This is the only way to see Neuschwanstein Castle.
