Munich has preserved several of it’s town gates - but this my favorite. From the Karlsplatz underground station, one emerges and sees this wonder - with a beautiful fountain in front. On the other side of the “gate” the major downtown pedestrian zone starts (or ends, based on your perspective).

Worth making a point to see when in downtown Munich.

This is one of what used to be Munich's famed city wall from the medieval ages till late into the 18th century. It served as a major defensive fortification and checkpoint. It is located near Karlsplatz at the western end of Neuhauser Straße, a portion of Munich's down-town pedestrian zone. What remains today are two towers and the connecting arch with only little resemblance of the vast medieval walls and gate that formed the city main defense.

It lies just beyond the large fountains and has been well restored. Three statues stand side by side on its entrance wall but no information as to what they are. Beyond lie the various historic sites of the ancient city. A couple of the other city gates have survived or have been rebuilt and have various functions as event locations, etc.
