It lies just beyond the large fountains and has been well restored. Three statues stand side by side on its entrance wall but no information as to what they are. Beyond lie the various historic sites of the ancient city. A couple of the other city gates have survived or have been rebuilt and have various functions as event locations, etc.

Karlstor is one of what used to be the gates into Munich's walled city and fortifications from the medieval ages till late into the 18th century. It served as a major defensive fortification and checkpoint. The gate consists of of three arches and is the entrances to Neuhauserstrasse, one of the main shopping streets of Munich.

This is a grand entrance to the Old Town area of modern shops and St Peters Cathedral. It makes for a nice backdrop to photos. A short walk from the train station. There’s a huge fountain in front of it.

We walked from Central Station to Karlsplatz, about 7 minutes walk. Beautiful street and nice gate, with other historic buildings lining the street.
