“Karlstor (Karl's Gate)”
Reviewed October 18, 2012

Karlstor (originally Neuhauser Tor (Gate), but later renamed for Prince Karl Theodore as "Karl's Gate") is one of three remaining city gates built in the 14th Century. This gate marks the beginning of the pedestrian area which extends down Neuhauserstrasse and Kaufinger Strasse to the Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall). Please note, however, that it is not all original. Part of it was renovated in the 1800's after an explosion destroyed the central tower. No matter, it still makes for good photos...and on the inside of the gate, on Neuhauserstrasse, look for the "Brunnenbuberl" a fanciful fountain, also worth a photo

“You won't miss it”
Reviewed April 27, 2012

Karl's Gate is at the entrance to one of the main streets in Munich. This road leads to the main square, Marienplatz. It's hard to miss if you plan to visit this area so you're almost guaranteed to see it. It's quite a sight, especially after the sun has gone down and it's lit up.

“City Gate 1”
Reviewed December 29, 2011

Of Munich's original four outer gates to the city during the Middle Ages, only three remain. This is one of them, the Karlstor. It was originally known as the Neuhauser Tor but was renamed in 1797 after Karl Theodor. The Elector created a new square near the Karlstor, officially known as Karlsplatz. The gate was integrated into the plans for the new square by adding wings to each side of the gate, creating a semi-circular square.
It originally had three towers, but the tallest, central tower was destroyed in 1857 when the gunpowder that was stored in the tower exploded. Seems this was a problem in Rothenburg as well. The two side towers were renovated in 1861 after a neo-gothic design by the Italian architect Domenico Zanetti. I really enjoy the old fortifications and they always make great Olde World photo ops.

“Great photo Opportunity.”
Reviewed September 27, 2011

It's a lovely unique looking entrance leading to the centre of town. Also there are lots of restaurants, and a fountain for photos as well.
