“Lest We Forget”

White Rose Monument
Reviewed October 20, 2013

This monument, tucked in a corner of the gardens adjacent to the main palace - Hofburg Gardens - is worth a stop. Dedicated to the memory of the young university students who gave their lives to try and warm people of the rising Nazi threat, this makes a meaningful spot to stop and contemplate the enormity of the movement that had its roots in this city - and those brave enough to speak up. The gardens also have a wonderful biergarten worth a stop on your explorations.

We went here last minute and are glad we did so. The lady at the desk was lovely and spoke very good English.
They have English audio guides which are fantastic. All the boards are in German so the audio guide comes in very handy.
The story of the White Rose is one that should never be swept under the carpet as it show's how people in power are just big bullies and if you try to speak out and against the power they will get rid of you. They were very brave people that unfortunately got caught in the end.
I have now ordered the DVD of the film about this story.

This exhibition is located inside the university and you should visit when in Munich. It is a reminder to us all about the sacrifices made by people in the past, to protect our right to free speech.

Outside the entrance to the university there are stones carvings, shaped like paper pamphlets, set into the ground. Inside the university there are several monuments and then an exhibit which is free to visit.

The only fault that I could find is that the exhibit is all in German. There are books available to read regarding the Third Reich and the White Rose in all different languages and you can also buy copies of books and posters in various languages.

If you are interested in human rights, the Third Reich and Free Speech... then you should visit the White Rose whilst in Munich
