Hotel Leopold

Over 20 years, I have stayed at Leopold dozens of times and always found it to be a satisfying experience. Privately owned and operated, this medium sized hotel is in the residential district of Schwabing on a major street, not far from the university. Thus, there are shops and restaurants more calibrated to the student and residential population than to tourists.

There are surface (bus) stops nearby and the underground (subway) is a short walk towards the center of the city. Strolling the Leopold Str. is always an interesting experience with lots of things to see and do. If you walk all the way into the city, you will pass the great Residenz and find yourself on Ludwig Str., which is the city part of the same street.

I have stayed in many different rooms and think the best are in the in the back and facing the atrium/garden, which has less street noise. Singles are small, but comfortable. Doubles are also more than adequate and always clean. There are rooms in the front of the hotel, but I do not recommend them as they face the street and many do not have a private bath.

If you stay there once, their large data base will remember you. They have records going back at least over the 20 years that I have visited them. But you need to let them know when you arrive, otherwise you will be checked in all over again.

There a fee-based, (I think 5 Euros buys you 15 minutes use time), computer for internet access in an alcove off the lobby. It has a German keyboard and takes some getting used to, but you can tap into your USA-based ISP and your emails.

Rooms at most times are in the 100 Euro range, but, like all hotels, vary with season and holidays. I have even found rooms available there during Oktoberfest, however and they were much more reasonable than other in city properties.

There is a restaurant which serves the full complimentary breakfast and, unless there is a tour group staying there, it is usually quiet and has an excellent buffet.

A few steps away, nearly hidden on a street by the police station, is the top-of-the-line Tantris restaurant, by far the best in the city, with a long history of great chefs and, at present, 2 Michelin Stars with the creative chef, Hans Hass. This is worth a visit, but reservations are often booked long in advance. Spend the hundreds of Euros you save at the hotel at the restaurant!

Towards the city and within easy walking distance, are a small market and many restaurants. Al Pachino's is a fast-moving, big portion, reasonable priced Italian spot about five minutes walk. Further towards the city center are Korean, Chinese, Mexican and steak houses (2), all with good service and reasonable prices, probably because this is a student area, not one set for tourists. I can recommend the Blockhouse chain of steak house as comparable to the American Out Back chain. You can walk or take the metro to the nearest stop.

This is an excellent, less costly, hotel in Munich for singles, couples or a small family. Parking is on premises and has, in the past, been free. There is no attraction for children in the hotel or the area, so I would not recommend this for families with children under 15 or so.

This is not a typical American-attracting hotel. It is low key and not advertised. If you want "American," there is a Holiday Inn up the street.

I hosted a trip that spent one night in Munich. Our stay was great. The front desk staff was so helpful. the rooms were clean and very nice, and the German buffet breakfast was delightful. All 10 in my group raved about my choice of hotels.

We were disappointed with the Hotel Leopold when we visited in May 04 on our honeymoon trip. The room was overly small and immediatley adjacent to the parking lot. The hotel itself seems to be a natural sound amplifier, and the interior door in our room made an odd groaning noise everytime it moved. When we approached the front desk about our discomfort we were treated rudely. The next morning, the desk attendent was much more helpful but by then we had made other arrangements and moved to a hotel down the block. Personally, I wouldn't go back.

I have stayed at the Hotel Leopold several times. Part of the hotel is old but there is a newer addition. Expect typical city street noise when staying in the older section. Pay to park (typical). I've had good rooms and poor rooms (small, terrible beds). Be sure to check that the beds are satisfactory. Adjacent restaurant is convenient. Excellent breakfast. Good hotel location considering Munich traffic - hotel is on the northeast part of Munich proper and thus convenient when departing for the airport.

Happened across Hotel Leopold while visiting Munich during Oktoberfest 2002. We had friends staying across the street at another hotel for 250 euro a night and we lucked out that Hotel Leopold had rooms! For only a fraction of the price we enjoyed one of the best stays of our travels. From the friendly staff and the spacious and comfy rooms to the WONDERFUL breakfast we were truely spoiled!
