We spent 4 nights here during the peak of Oktoberfest. The inner courtyard was a haven of tranquility. You would never know the infamous Hofbrauhaus is right around the corner and Marienplatz and the open air food market (Viktualienmarkt) are two short blocks away. Location Location Location!

First, this hotel is in a great spot. Just a few quick blocks to Marienplatz and the Opera House, a few quick steps to Hofbrauhaus and Schuhbecks restaurant - we were still discovering places that were right around the corner on our last day there. The hotel has an unfussy entry, not a true lobby, but as soon as you step in you get a feel for the character of the place: a few unexpected steps to the front desk, a charming open-air courtyard in the back, narrow stairs and hallways, and a tiny elevator (2 people + 2 suitcases means 2 trips). The room we had was a spacious suite (generously referred to as an apartment) that was great, with a private vestibule, a terrific compact kitchen in the living area, big bedroom and roomy bathroom. The furniture was more practical than luxurious, and the shower required an awkward dismount (you'd understand if you saw it), and there were a few other things that made the place interesting. But the room was comfortable, the staff was great, and we wouldn't hesitate recommending this hotel as a great home base when visiting Munich. Breakfast is available (but not included) and the hotel does have a nice onsite restaurant, and there are several really nice restaurants and bakeries less than a block away. The kitchen was a true bonus, with an espresso machine, refrigerator, microwave, and dishwasher, as was the onsite laundry room for freshening up your wardrobe without the laundry service fee.

The hotel felt like it was dated. Lots of steps / stairs so problematic for lugging suitcases.
Very quiet apart from noisy staff cleaning up at about 11.30 pm.
Excellent garden area. (Good for smokers I suppose)
Wifi connectivity was very slow, intermittent and frustrating. We needed to sign in often daily during our stay. We saw from reviews that others also wrote about this.
Friendly staff. Good location.

Dear Wheathouse,

thank you very much for taking the time to write this review about your stay at the Maximilian Munich. I am sorry to read that our staff members were noisy cleaning up at night.
It is true that certain areas in the hotel are only accessible through stairs - this is because the buildings are historical protected, and we are unable to change for example the lobby.
We also apologize for having to sign in more often than usual to get into the wi-fi - we are in the process of changing our entire System, however in a hotel like ours with more than one building, a garden etc this needs a little more time and consideration....
We still hope to be your hotel of choice whenever your travels bring you back to Munich.
Sincerely yours
Eva Kubon

My wife and I are here for 3 days. The hotel was easy to find. We walked with luggage from the train stop. Easy. The staff were good about holding our luggage as it was 10:00 am when we arrived. They also admitted that there was no A/C but they offered a fan. It was fixed within 24 hours. Our room faces a garden. Really quiet at night, but easy walk to all sights and restaurants. We recommend highly.

This hotel has great potential: excellent location in the heart of the Munich, comfortable rooms, many even with balconies. All have a kitchenette where you can prepare a snack if you so wish.
The real bonus is the very private garden - that was the main reason why we chose this hotel.
But despite all those obvious advantages I did not feel at home. Service with a smile was lacking - and when I contacted the reception that our room was not done and beds still unmade mid afternoon - I definitely got the cold shoulder.

The other thing lacking is a guest lounge or anywhere to sit other than one's room, the garden or the restaurant.
The hotel is classed as 4 star and its prices are rather steep for Germany.

Dear jutta822,

thank you very much for taking the time to write a review about your stay with us. I am sorry to read that you did not feel at home and that our service did not reach your expectations.

It is true that due to the architecture we do not have a lounge as such- but guests are more than welcome to relax in our wintergarden or the terrasse, where we do have a little loung area.
When it comes to hotel rates, Munich as such is more expensive than any other city in Germany.

We still hope to be your hotel of choice on your next trip to Munich.

Sincerely yours, Eva Kubon
