We have just returned from a very pleasant 6-day stay at the Hotel Mariandl, which we liked a great deal. However this hotel will not be to everyone's taste and, you need to know what to expect, here are some observations:
First point to note is that this is a Pension; not a 4 or 5 star hotel so, no television or hair-dryer in room (although a dryer was supplied upon request) and no lift. This hotel has atmosphere and character - including bare wooden creaking stairs, crumbling plaster on the ceiling and original fittings – fading splendour springs to mind! The bits that mattered have been attended to - bathrooms were modern and clean and beds were clean and comfortable and there is daily room cleaning. There is a café on the ground floor, which has live music (of variable quality – some very good) nearly every evening – if your room is on the first floor you will hear the music (which stops 23:30 to 24:00)!
We took two rooms on the first floor. No. 13 was a vast room on corner of building (325 sq.ft., 30 sq.metres) containing 1 double bed (2 singles pushed together) and two other singles, a deep bath tub on a plinth in the bedroom and a separate toilet and shower (with a huge drenching rose – which flooded most of the floor when in use!). The secondary glazing on two of the three windows was missing several panels, which meant any insulation was ineffective. No. 19 was a very small single room with its own shower/toilet.
We looked in a couple of other rooms on the first floor as they were being cleaned and they looked very nice and had wooden bedsteads. Not all the rooms have ensuite facilities but may have a toilet and bathroom across the corridor allocated to their occupants.
The café is unostentatious – the haunt of residents rather than tourists. Breakfast is taken in a non-public area of the café and includes the normal selection of breads, cold meats and cheeses, together with cereals, fresh fruit salad and yoghurt. There is also the means for guests to boil of fry eggs. Coffees and teas are prepared freshly in the café. In good weather you can sit outside and watch the world go by.
