“A delight - but won't suit everyone!”
Reviewed August 11, 2007

We have just returned from a very pleasant 6-day stay at the Hotel Mariandl, which we liked a great deal. However this hotel will not be to everyone's taste and, you need to know what to expect, here are some observations:

First point to note is that this is a Pension; not a 4 or 5 star hotel so, no television or hair-dryer in room (although a dryer was supplied upon request) and no lift. This hotel has atmosphere and character - including bare wooden creaking stairs, crumbling plaster on the ceiling and original fittings – fading splendour springs to mind! The bits that mattered have been attended to - bathrooms were modern and clean and beds were clean and comfortable and there is daily room cleaning. There is a café on the ground floor, which has live music (of variable quality – some very good) nearly every evening – if your room is on the first floor you will hear the music (which stops 23:30 to 24:00)!

We took two rooms on the first floor. No. 13 was a vast room on corner of building (325 sq.ft., 30 sq.metres) containing 1 double bed (2 singles pushed together) and two other singles, a deep bath tub on a plinth in the bedroom and a separate toilet and shower (with a huge drenching rose – which flooded most of the floor when in use!). The secondary glazing on two of the three windows was missing several panels, which meant any insulation was ineffective. No. 19 was a very small single room with its own shower/toilet.

We looked in a couple of other rooms on the first floor as they were being cleaned and they looked very nice and had wooden bedsteads. Not all the rooms have ensuite facilities but may have a toilet and bathroom across the corridor allocated to their occupants.

The café is unostentatious – the haunt of residents rather than tourists. Breakfast is taken in a non-public area of the café and includes the normal selection of breads, cold meats and cheeses, together with cereals, fresh fruit salad and yoghurt. There is also the means for guests to boil of fry eggs. Coffees and teas are prepared freshly in the café. In good weather you can sit outside and watch the world go by.

Hotel Mariandl is really a pension in the old school euro way.
It is a five-7 minute walk from one of the main train stations in the city, and is also a 10 minute walk to the center of old town with lots of cool and interesting shops and nice old residential buildings along the way.
It is in an older castle-like building above a wonderful cafe that serves great beer, wine, and german fare. They also have classical music in the evening which is great, and it is a very happening local spot.
The rooms are huge and decorated in an old ornate style, but the beds are supremely comfortable. Some have baths en suite, while others have a shared bath with the most luxurious showers I have ever seen or used!!!
The breakfast is fantastic, with fresh homemade breads and german meats and cheeses, and made to order cappuccinos and fresh squeezed juices.
The staff are almost non existent, you check in with whatever waiter is on duty, and the cafe staff do have a bit of uber eurotude going on, but whatever, I do not like to be bothered and prefer to be on my own anyway, so no problem.
If you like your hand held, try something else, if you like good value and can manage on your own then this is the place!!

  • Liked — great older building, location, and cafe right under!!
  • Disliked — lack of focused staff
  • Tips/Secrets — the rooms with shared bath have nicer baths and we never waited, and they were spotless!!
