“Long past quaint”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

This expensive hotel is hard to find and in a rather noisy location. It is long past quaint, now old and creaky and in need of renovation. The antiques are interesting, but we prefer a newer bathroom with a convenient shower. We should have booked a modern place and then easily could have taken public transport to the Englischer Garten park.

We've been staying at this guesthouse every year since 2010. My reason for selecting this guesthouse over any other in Munich is its proximity to the beautiful and vast Englischer Garten. The gardens (only 20 paces from the front door) is actually a huge park (larger than NY's Central Park) with woods, grass areas, a stream, surfing, swimming, bike riding, horse riding, boating and at least 3 beer gardens that also serve food.

We always stay in the main building (there is also an apartment annex) which is traditionally decorated. Room 14 (my favourite) is at the back of the hotel and it is one of the rooms in the main building with an en-suite bathroom and a nice view of their private garden and on to the trees of the Englischer Garten. A nice quiet location - but not in the middle of no-where. Nearby are several nice places to eat or have a drink and it's about a 10 minute walk to the U-Bahn underground/metro (Munchener Freiheit). We enjoyed having breakfast at a local bakery called Butterbrot.

The staff are always friendly and welcoming. The location is perfect.

I took at look at a room in the Apartment annex (room 45) and it is more modern with large windows overlooking a private garden. It has a small kitchen and is surprisingly a bit cheaper than our usual room in the main house - maybe next time?

We were there in late August 2011 and this was our second stay.
We booked room number 10 which is very large with antiques and overlooking the Englischer Gartens.Good breakfast parking is limited but well worth the effort.
Location not too far the main street Leopoldstrasse which has beautiful shops and outdoor cafes. Will return very time we are in Munich (München)\Also a very good restaurant just across the street-Osternvalgarten.

The house has a great location right next to the Englischer Garten in the heart of Munich. Getting there with public transport takes some time from the main station ( around 30-40 minutes). The room I stayed was in a separate house which did not seem to belong the hotel itself. There were some renovations going on. The staff was generally very friendly and nice. Breakfast was pretty tiny with limited choices and everything in the room was very old. Especially the bathroom was in 60s style and showering there wasnt that great...
Considering the price I will stay somewhere else in the future.

Room Tip: try to get one in the main house...

I chose the Gastehaus Englischer Garten based on a Frommer's review. I almost changed my reservation because of the mixed reviews on tripadvisor but I'm so glad I didn't! My husband and I agree that Gastehaus is one of our favorite B&Bs ever. Its location to the Englischer Garten and particularly, its proximity to the Kleinhesseloher See is perfection! When we arrived in Munich we couldn't think of a better way to spend the day but at the Englischer Garten by the lake and then in a nearby beer garten.

We stayed in the main house in room 90, which was lovely. It was spacious, clean, and cozy. We were also nearby to the computer, which provided free Internet access. The breakfasts offered a lot of options. We left satisfied every morning.

The staff especially Sonja and Johanna, were extremely friendly and helpful. When we left we felt like we were leaving friends. We would absolutely return to Munich and when we do, we will be staying at the Gastehaus.

I love the location of this hotel as it sits right at the park in Munich. Getting there with luggage is a problem though, especially if it is raining. If you can stay in the main house the rooms are very nice and quaint, with a view of the park and you can even hear the brook next to the hotel in the summer. The breakfast was not worth the charge in my opinion, but it was convenient given the distance to Leopoldstrasse and the Cafes there. Overall a good hotel with some minor drawbacks. The restaurant across the street is great, btw!

Room Tip: Stay in the main house!
