“A Gem !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2014

If the Mandarin Oriental Munich is any standard for luxury hotels to go by, this is the Gold Standard.
In fact, it was the best hotel experience, especially from a service point of view, we have encountered in this part of the world.
Starting with the concierge, who was ever so helpful and friendly, to the manager on duty, the complimentary welcome drinks, to the lovely bartender, the list goes on. We even overheard another guest telling the bar tender that he is so amazing, giving people such happiness...wow! The location is second to none, the room spacious, luxurious, modern with an Asian touch, the bathroom fabulous (loved the heated floors)....I cannot fathom who would not be able to enjoy this spectacular place.
We look forward to coming back again - thank you for making our holiday truly memorable.

Firstly, this is a hotel/hotel chain that prides so much in it's excellent service.
We should have had a clue about this excellence by slow email correspondence, not answering exact questions etc. We had only one specific request and it wasn't fulfilled.
To be more specific, it was important for us to have a room with good radiator central heating, and that was one of the reasons for choosing this hotel. On arrival we were shown to a room without working heating, instead electric radiator was brought. (Well, if this was a 2 star hotel, it would have been okay.) This was followed by a complicated explanations that this is the case for every room, that it is just air-conditioning hotel and that it will start working eventually, that it's maybe not working only in that specific room, that it will be repaired.... Than, we were offered drinks while they tried, but didn't repair it, calling us to see are we satisfied with heating not still working, etc.
At this point, a manager on duty showed up. She was polite and professional, offered us another room and the problem was solved. All in order, heating working without a problem. They did apologize with a note, but when you spend first couple of hours dealing with trivialities like this, excellence is last thing on your mind.
The rest of the stay went all right, everybody were polite, big smiles and everything, apart from the fact that concierge gave us the information of Neuschweinstain castle working on a day that it was closed... good thing we checked again on internet.
Our new room was spacious, clean and modern , the location is excellent, breakfast also, food at the restaurant very good. Still, I think it is overpriced, a bit snobbish, and with inadequate service for a 5 star establishment. Managers on duty were always professional and with precise information, so if you have requests or problems, I suggest you speak directly to them.
In conclusion, I have to say that for me good service doesn't have to include fake smiles, "remembering my name" and small talk. It may be a personal preference, but straightforward, professional approach, and genuinely nice people are what makes a hotel excellent.

Dear J and M,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences on the occasion of your stay at Mandarin Oriental, Munich. I am very sorry that your reservation was not answered promptly and specific and that the heating did not work in the room reserved for you. You can be assured that it is our aim to fulfill guests’ requests and needs and I sincerely apologize that we failed this time. In regard to Neuschwanstein castle it is incomprehensible that you were given wrong information as all concierges are aware of their opening hours (Neuschwanstein is open every day except Christmas Days, New Year’s Eve and New Year). Again, please allow me to apologize for the substandard technical service you have experienced at the beginning of your stay. Considering your grading we truly hope that these incidents have not tarnished your image of Mandarin Oriental, Munich and that we will have the opportunity to welcoming you again to our hotel.
Best regards,

The hotel is wonderful and the staff is fantastic. The attend to every need/want and are very friendly. Everyone remembers your name and go out of their way to assist. The rooms are beautiful, especially on the upper floors. I want the bathroom in my home.... The hotel is indulgent and the food is expensive, but worth it. I've stayed here many times and am never disappointed.

A late but should not miss review from our wonderful experience in August 2013.

We selected MO for our family vacation because:

1. It ranked #1 in Munich

2. They responded promptly to our inquiry

3. They were extremely accommodating via email communication

The hotel located in a residential area but is within walking distance to everything: there are great and reasonably priced restaurants within 1-2 blocks. McDonald and KFC are about 2 blocks away; grocery and pharmacy are less than 2 blocks away, across the street from Bus Bavaria Neuschwanstein Castle Tours (Mike's Bike Tour); 2-3 blocks from all designer shops.

We arrived early, as promised, our room was ready within 15 min of check in. They particularly assigned a room at the end of the floor for us as requested. Upon walking into our room, we noticed everything we have requested have already been arranged in the room. The room was large, nicely decorated and clean (now, I'm a bit picky, so the wooden floor could have been a touch cleaner and a more attention in details at/around the commode could be helpful). There was plenty of closet/storage spaces in the room. The bed was extremely comfortable. They put in a roll away bed for one of our children and neatly draped it with crisp sheet, puff blanket and clean pillow before our arrival. They took the time and paid careful attention to planning to satisfy each guest.

We ate breakfast at the restaurant every day. Great buffet selection (cold cuts such as ham, turkey, salami..., different types of cheese, smoke salmon, pastries, cereal, fruits, bread....) and a good selection of made to order items (included in the buffet price) to include oatmeal, boiled egg, omelet, bacon...The service at the restaurant was impeccable. The servers were polite, attentive and observant. One day, they noticed my daughter was fussy..they quietly left and came back with 2 wrapped kid gifts for both my son and daughter. That, of course, took all of the pressure from us parents trying to calm the toddler.

The day we left Munich, it was so early in the morning that we didn't get to eat breakfast...They attentively arranged with the kitchen to prepare our take away. We were handed a Mandarin Oriental bag and my jaw dropped when I looked inside: 2 entrees for us (with starch/vegi packed separately, 2 entrees for the kids, water, drink, a pitcher of coffee (OMG, the one that keeps coffee/water warm), cups, creamers, sugars, utensils...We left Munich to Paris and London knowing no other hotels will be like MO.

Not until after coming back home from London that we realized the stack of kids DVD collection was left in Munich. I emailed the hotel. Within days, I received the package sent from Munich (I paid the postage via credit card), and of course, there were some toys for the kiddos along with a handwritten note from the supervisor.

Loved EVERYTHING about MO-Munich and I actually got emotional writing this review 6 months after our stay. The people here, from the Bell staff, front desk, housekeeping, server and management made this hotel great. Wouldn't stay anywhere else!

Room Tip: We loved our third floor end of the hall room

One does expect Mandarin group to have a high standard. But not all mandarins are this friendly and helpful.

I felt well pampered from the moment I sent them an email to make a reservation to the time we checked out.

Concierge after concierge , assistant managers tried to make advance preparations of our arrivals with so many emails and tips for a successful stay.

Arriving on the first day of the year Jan 1. 2014 could be a big problem in many countries but it all went very well started from the smooth pickup by the Mercedes Benz E Class to fit our 3 large Suit cases and 2 small ones on freezing evening.

We got a great room on the 6th Floor ( 7th floor has no direct elevator it seems)next the presidential suit with the fabulous view to the old city,
If you happen to be on business and has no time to leave the room, at least you can appreciate the beauty of the city.
The room is large, comfortable with thoughtful details and enough mirrors and lights.

Welcome fruit basket with Lychees in mid winter was a treat!

The heated floor bathroom certainly was well equipped and new.

This was part of my 7 cities trip and it was the only hotel that had bathrobes belts that had already been looped - a sign of great hotels referred by CNNi corespondent Richard Quest on his program Business Traveller.

I highly recommended this hotel not only because of its great location easy walk from the shopping areas and the medieval and clock towers areas ( must see at the hour ) but because the staff are extremely friendly and always guessing your needs before you asked for help,

The hotel also has 2 restaurants and a lobbybar
This Lobbybar serve Jimmy Choo Tea Time Special which I missed by 30 mins when I arrived
at 5:30 PM) sadly...

The lobby restaurant served great games meal venison was excellent.
Marks on the 2 floor is a Michelin stared restaurant.

All with outstanding service and friendly staff and time just flew by.
I certainly will stay at The Mandarin again as I am now a "FAN"!

I can only assume that they have an excellent manager who values people and guests.

Room Tip: Higher floor rooms have good view. Ask for old city view. Breakfast around 9 am is quite full.( (T...

this lovely hotel is superbly located. we arrived for our weekend away to see visit and shop the christmas markets. the hotel was decorated so lovely for christmas. the staff were friendly and helpful. room was delightful and bed was so comfortable i could have just slept the whole time. we did grab a drink at the bar but weren't given a table as they were reserved for afternoon tea, fair enough. we hadn't known to book the chalet at the top of the hotel for drinks but were squeezed in at the last minute. was fun and warm, the food menu was very basic but drinks and laughs were had. overall, great stay!
