Holiday Inn Munich - City Centre
Ranked #74 of 385 Hotels in Munich
Reviewed June 3, 2014

I had to do 2 reservations (1 day + 2 days) to split the invoice on 2 different cards (personal + professional). This generated lots of issues the hotel seemed to have difficulties to deal with.

After the 1st night.
- in the morning 9am, the internet connection stopped working although we purchased a 24h connection the day before. This was weird but we thought it was a glitch. It prevented us to do some work - but it's life.
- the fridge didn't open (we had put some of our own bottles in there). It was weird too but we didn't pay too much attention to it, and we went out for the day.

When we came back in the evening, the room was locked (with all our luggage in there) and we had to go to the reception before going to bed. The staff was nice and reopened the room without issue.
In the room, there was a letter asking us to go to the reception - but as we just came from there, we figured everything was fine. Internet was still not working, fridge still didn't open.

Next morning, there is another letter at the entrance of the room asking us to go to the reception. We go to the breakfast. We are said that no credit card was entered (although it was entered at day 1 when we arrived), and that breakfast was 25€ per person. This is more expensive than what you get in a 3 or 4 star hotel. I ask twice that if I understand correctly what they say (we never know), but that's how much it is. We are hungry, so we give them our card. Obviously the quality was similar to what you get in any other low-cost hotel - something worth 10-15€ top.

During breakfast, we start realizing what is happening and that there is an actual issue because of the 2 separate reservations. We realize that the internet connection has been stopped by the hotel (it doesn't matter we paid for a 24h-long connection) and that the fridge was locked by the hotel as well.

We go to the reception and ask to resolve the problems. They recognize our conclusions are true, apologize, take the necessary actions. Back in the room, everything is working as expected.

In the evening when we get back to the room, we realize the room is locked again. Back to the reception one last time. They apologize again, and reopen the room.

We happily leave the next morning.

My conclusion :
- I don't understand why everything was not solved once and for all the first time we went to the reception
- the stay was very unpleasant and we had to deal with issues all week-end
- staff was very nice and polite but they only resolved problems one by one as we raised them
- breakfast price is obscene for what you get. I would highly recommend to go somewhere else if you can.

All in all, I am disappointed. Unless I have no choice, I will definitely avoid this particular chain of hotels in the future.

Dear pwohlschl,
Thank you for your candid feedback. I understand your frustration of making multiple trips to the Reception for the things that should have been clarified at the check in. Usually we request all our guests with connecting reservation to sign the diffrent registration cards at check in and also seek their permission to authorize the credit card for each reservation. The key is then coded for rntire stay. However with pre paid reservations, it gets little tricky because then the credit card is not needed unless the guest would like to use extras.

My sincere apologies for all the inconvenience caused. I am going to use your feedback for training purpose for a better guest experience in future.

Thank you once again for staying with us. I hope to restore your faith in our amenities and service next time you visit Munich.

Best regards

This hotel is nice and pleasant to stay in. Location is fantastic with everything you would want to see walking distance away.
No complaints but no massive praises either. Clean and does the job.
It has a nice bar area. We didn't eat in the restaurant but it looked nice enough walking past. We used the pool which was ok.

My daughter and I stayed there one night. The room was nice, the beds very comfortable, the staff great. Breakfast buffet was really impressive, and they even gave us a late check out until 4pm! The only thing that bothered me was the really high room service prices, not only for the menu items, but also an extra service charge of 7 Euros, if I remember right.

I stayed for 3 nights in this hotel whilst on business and whilst the accomodation was fine there were a couple of things that in my opinion reduced my overall opinion. First off, the price was very steep - yes, the location is great, right along the main S-Bahn lines, direct access via an underground walkway, two supermarkets close by, dozens of restaurants to chose from, but to charge 150EUR for the room is a bit excessive. And this did not include breakfast which was another 15EUR each day, nor internet which was another 10EUR per day. So in total I spent 175EUR per day, which seems to me a bit steep.
But putting that issue aside, location is great, the S-Bahn from the airport has a stop there, so easy access and lots of restaurants to chose from. Mattress was firm and good, water pressure excellent and they had a shower curtain which I was greatful for as sometimes these hotels only have a small glass partition which does not stop the water from dripping out. Buffet breakfast was diverse and fresh and receptionists were very efficient.
Overall good experience, but the price was too expensive.

We recently spent 3 nights at this hotel. First the pros, unbeatable location in my opinion. Even though it is not right in the center, it's a 15-20 walk and 2 s-bahn stations away. It is right next to the English Garden and the s-bahn station is connected to the hotel thru a small shopping center with a sizable supermarket. Rooms were clean, everything in working order and we had a nice view of the sunset every evening. Since I'm a rewards member, we got free wifi (great speed) and a welcome drink and snack. We had breakfast included for one night and it was very good in my opinion but maybe not for 20 euros.

Now for the cons. The exterior is very dated and almost dirty looking, but it's fine once you get inside. The rooms are a bit on a small side and just very utilitarian. You have everything you need for a hotel in this class, mini fridge, safe, kettle, flat screen, but not one bit more. Not many products in the bathroom, not many english channels, etc. All in all, it's more like a Holiday Inn at Crown Plaza prices in my opinion though you can get a very good promotional deal if you pay in advance.

We stayed here for a week's sightseeing in and around Munich. We had asked for a quiet room and got one and we didn't mind the lack of scenic view. The room was a reasonable size for the two of us so we didn't need to use the lounge. We didn't have any hotel breakfasts (we already knew the price was ludicrously high for anyone without an expense account) and we ate out in the evenings, so we can't comment on the food. Little though we used the hotel facilities, whenever we needed customer service it was fine. Everything was clean. Some reviewers have criticised the hotel décor, but apart from some corridors looking a little tired, we were very happy with our stay.

There is a wide variety of cafes and shops below the hotel, as well as the Rosenheimerplatz station, which was tremendously convenient - although the ticket machines refused my cards and don't accept notes greater than 10 euros. If arriving at the weekend from the airport and the S8 S-bahn line, you must change at Ostbahnhof, as from there the S8s bypass the city centre. There are several restaurants near the hotel and all the way into the city centre. The river is close by and there are lots of walks you can do on either side of the river and on the long thin island between the north and south banks.

Room Tip: Room 411 was quiet, as promised. The view over flat rooftops was dull, but a good view was not our...
