We had a great meal in the Augustiner next to the Hofbrauhaus. The food was really great - Schweinebraten for a main course and shared a Kaiserschmarrn for dessert (an amazing pancake type pudding with apple sauce!)

I tried a few beers in there, but Edelstoff had to have been the best.

Discretely located near the must-see Marienplatz – this place is definitely worth the search and short walk. This must-visit authentic German eating and drinking complete with the Oom-pah music & noisy, festive, fun Bavarian Pub atmosphere. 1/2 the people there were from Germany which is a terrific sign when looking for a true German experience. .

Although getting a reservation is HIGHLY recommended to avoid a long wait, we just walked in and luckily didn't have to wait for a table or wait long for our food. We had attentive and very friendly service – not too fast and not too slow. Waiter happily recommended what we ordered, including the beer and gave us the history of the beer and restaurant, which we found very interesting. Augustiner is now my favourite German beer.

Prices are a little high for Canadians but “reasonable” for Germans (it is Europe after-all so you can't expect Florida cheap meal pricing. The Schnitzel dinner is EUR 18, 1 portion of sauerkraut is EUR 2.50 but these prices aren't as high as some of the surrounding restaurants – in fact, our hotel recommended this place for the true German experience at a good price. The portions are large and delicious. It isn't as expensive as the nearby touristy, over-crowded HofBräuHaus so come to Augustiner for food and beer then to HofBräuHaus for a beer & different taste of Munich. Both are fun – but very different. If you had to only visit one though – it would be this one hands down.

We loved:
Schweinshaxe (crispy pork knuckle) – it's a MUST!
Wiener schnitzel
The Bratwurst Platter
Beef goulash and potato soup
Weisswurst
Apple strudel

Nothing is good about this restaurant, starting from the service. The entire staff (except for the cleaning lady outside the toilet) is rude and disrespectful. The food is with no doubt the worst I tried in Munich (I visited the city a few times), and the beer is, if possible, even worse. They are still in business only because of their location, right in front of Hofbrauhaus. Avoid this place, if you can.

We tried to go there during our stay in Munich. After 10 min waiting near the door ( manager didn't invite us inside), we have shared our table with other tourists. We asked manager about other table, he was very rude( 3.01.14). We have gone. May be cuisine is good (who knows), but it's doesn't matter with such service...

If you're headed to the Hofbrauhaus, there's a very good chance that you walk by this place.

AMBIANCE
=========
Loud, busy, full of locals and tourists.
There are two rooms to this restaurant and a backwards "L"shaped bar set to one side.
There was seating upstairs, but sat downstairs at a communal table.
Typical Bavarian beer house decor with dark wood.

FOOD
=====
**ROASTED DUCK AND PORK WITH POTATO DUMPLING (16,90 €)**
The meats were good. Not the most tender, but still flavorful. The dumpling was a bit on the softer side.
Tasted wonderful with beer (duh).

BEVERAGE
=========
Three different beers pouring from tap (Edelstoff, Helles, Dunkel), plus a handful of additional Augustiner beers from the bottle (including their hefeweizen and pilsner). Half and full liter pours are available from tap, and half-liters were priced well at €3.40-3.65.

AUGUSTINER EDELSTOFF (3,60 €)
This was definitely good beer.
I don't normally drink beer, but this will change my heart.

OVERALL
========
I thought I grew chest hair after this meal. It was very manly.

GETTING HERE
==============
Public transports: stop Marienplatz
Subway Linien U3, U6 | S-Bahn Linien S1, S2, S4-S8 | stop Kammerspiele, Tram, lines 19

HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you're in the downtown area.
