Owner description: This prominent public square, the largest in Munich, still stands as the center of social activity in the city, much as it has throughout history.

Wander around, feel the history in this traditional European plaza now with modern shoppes. Check out the Rathskeller below the church for an excellent meal.

Architecturally the plaza is beautiful. Several clock towers in the area. Nice old buildings. The dancing figures under the clock in the main clock tower was fun to watch. Several places to eat, shop, or just sit around and people watch. The nearby Viktualienmarkt has tasty bratwurst food vendors to eat at.

I was in Munich on a business trip. My hotel was at walking distance to Marienplatz, so that’s where I went every day after work. The city was vibrant in the pre-October Fest, and full of controversy due to the migrating situation of the Syrians. There are tons of restaurants and beer is found everywhere.

Marienplatz is a popular destination for tourists, and for good reason. The square is surrounded by great shops and restaurants while musicians serenade you while you take in the fountain and people watching. The Glockenspiel with its old world technology has several daily performances. Walking and public transportation are the recommended means of getting to the square. The square is a great starting point for taking in many of the other local attractions.

While on the wonderful Sound of Music tour with Trafagar Tours we visited this attraction. It is the place to be at Noon when the Glockenspeil plays. We had lunch and beers in the square and enjoyed watching all the people!
