Owner description: This prominent public square, the largest in Munich, still stands as the center of social activity in the city, much as it has throughout history.

The square is packed with tourists, feels shabby with a fair amount of litter about and the Christmas market stalls (as others have mentioned) lack charm and variety. In the evening the stalls are lit-up with bulbs which gives the place some appeal but most are selling Gluhwein or cheap confectionery. I've seen better Christmas markets outside Germany! To sum up - it was a big 'let-down'.

The Christmas Market had just opened and it was sooo much fun.
All the vendors and all the lights, it was an amazing sight.
No place celebrates Christmas with Markets like this than Germany does

Emerging from the S Bahn station into the sights sounds and smells of Christmas Market time in Marienplatz is quite something, there is a lot to see and take in. Beware though it does become very crowded, and no one seems to take any prisoners, so be prepared to get stuck in otherwise you will not see much.

The gluhwein is a must, don't be alarmed when the stallholders charge a deposit on the mugs to guard against people like the earlier reviewer who decided to take them home. It is refunded promptly on safe return.

It is well worth visiting the market after dark as well, all the more atmospheric.

We were able to observe the Glockenspiel at the New Rathous in action on two separate occasions - a magnificent sight accompanied by melodious chimes and bells. The pillar with the golden statue of the Virgin Mary in the center of plaza was brilliant despite the overcast weather. The Christmas tree in front of the Rathaus was massive and decorated with hundreds of sparkling lights. Within the plaza and surrounding streets there were at least 200 booths selling every imaginable Christmas item, food booths, Gluhwein stations, as well as numerous gift options. Two S-bahn entrances (one in each corner) made it convenient to access from our hotel. The Frauenkirche, within two blocks of the plaza, is a massive Gothic structure that is beautiful to behold even though one of the towers is currently undergoing maintenance.

Great shopping area with a huge christmas market running through the Main Street, all the normal high street shops and a big dept store with a food hall on the lower floor.
