You can't go to Munich and miss the glockenspeil. So the Marienplatz is the place to sit and enjoy a coffee and strudel while you are waiting.

tons of restaurants, bars, clothing stores and the like. Seems like the place goes on forever. We ended up visiting a few times but on the second day we were there we found ourselves in the middle of what must be the largest gay parade on the planet! I have to say it was pretty entertaining but basically shut down the Marienplatz for the entire day and impossible to move around or get access to some of points of interest there. Not sure if this is an annual event at the same time each year but something you might consider if traveling there in July.

This central square in Munich was very crowded with tourists, but for good reason: to see the amazing historic architecture, the glockenspiel, the sunshine. It was great. I liked it so much, I visited several times during my trip. It is worth seeing both during the day and at night.

We walked down from our hotel near the Hauptbahnhof just in time to view the Glockenspiel show at 11 am. It was terribly crowded, but the architecture was beautiful and worth the short wait. No one should come to Munich without seeing this. Do check times with the tourist info center located inside the square, as the performance is not repeated every hour. Afterwards we took the S-bahn to the Deutsches Museum and stopped at a McDonalds near there for lunch at our boys' request. It was a really good day.

Beautiful building and a nice atmosphere. A very good place to people watch. At certain times of the day, figurines on the clocktower would move (jousters and then dancers who do a dance that's supposed to prevent the plague), worthwhile sticking round to watch. It's a crowded area though so obviously watch out for pickpockets.
