“Great location”
Reviewed October 16, 2011

This is a very minimalist but pleasant hotel right in the heart of the action for Munich. We found the staff to be very cordial although they are quite busy in the restaurant. We appreciated the sound proof windows as there is a lot of street noise late at night from the nearby Hofbrauhaus & other beer halls. That could affect comfort in the summer. The breakfasts are to order from a fantastic selection & everything was excellent. On Friday nights the bar & restaurant are packed with gorgeous young people & the restaurant itself is quite attractive. One down note is the lack of an elevator so be prepared to carry bags up stairs.

Room Tip: There is no elevator so there's quite a hike with bags to upper floors.

I booked a room here for two nights for oktoberfest this year. Having been out all day enjoying the festival, I came back to the hotel bar and sat down to order a drink. I was told that all of the seats were reserved for hotel guests. I tried to explain that I was a guest but the tall, bespectacled staff member was having none of it! There was no-one in the bar at all! I was told "we would rather have no money than your money", I've never been so offended by a barman in my life! I was then asked to leave by way of him standing over me, far too close for comfort.

I ended up going down the road for a night cap and then going back to my room (the entrance to the hotel is out of sight of the bar).

Room Tip: Don't go to this hotel if you don't want to be offended.

After a first fantatic stay at Hotel Lux in Winter, we decided to return in August - unfortunately, the heat wave in Germany made that stay a bit uncomfortable. The location - of course - is still fantastic; the room was provided to us earlier than the regular check-in times, which was very handy after a long train ride. With the room towards the streetside (which normally wouldn't have mattered) we had to learn very early (really early) that a construction site right opposite the hotel was more than loud with all equipment you do NOT want to hear at 7am. Room Temperature was a big issue, despite a portable A/C (or more like a fan), it was impossible to get the temperature to something feasible. So it was boiling hot all night. Whilst in Winter the rooms were superbly heated, dealing with heat in Summer is obviously not the biggest strenghts. The bathroom was fairly tiny, but manageable. Breakfast service was very slow this time. There must have been a change of staff, as this was so much more efficient and friendly, fast, the last time. It took too long getting our dishes, and the refill for coffee and orange juice alwas required prompting - no proactiveness. Otherwise the stay was ok.

This is a very conveniently located hotel in the heart of the historic, commercial and entertainment heart of this wonderful and popular with tourists Central European city.
It is a charming establishment managed by young and friendly staff.
There is commissioned Art hanging on the walls in the comfortable and reasonably priced rooms.
At this point one could end the review of this contemporary hotel if it wasn’ t for a number of remarks that would complete the picture of this establishment.
To begin with: The name «Bar-Restaurant with Rooms» would be more appropriate for this place.
Indeed the bench of the drinks bar at the Restaurant on the ground floor also doubles as a Reception to the hotel. You register there, you get your key from there, you report any problems with your room and you pay the bill of your stay at the drinks bar. There is nothing wrong with that . It is just part of the review.
The hotel has no elevator. There are 69 (sixty nine) steps to climb to the fourth floor where our room was. We carried our four pieces of luggage all by ourselves although a young lady at the bar told us later that we could have asked for help!
«No one asked us upon registering if we needed help with our things» was our answer to that.
And what happens if you have forgotten something in the room? Do you go up 69 steps and down again or you forget the whole thing?
And when you return to the hotel being exhausted from walking all day the city centre of Munich?
Answer: You use your strong trained legs! Nothing wrong with that either!
There is no emergency escape route in the five floor building except the main spiral wooden stair that gives access to the floors.
I am not informed of the German fire regulations with regard to hotels. But the whole experience of staying on the fourth floor with only one wooden staircase as an emergency exit felt very claustrophobic.
On our first morning we left the room at around 9am. Upon our return at four o’ clock in the afternoon the room was still undone. We gathered that someone had been in the room since the bed covers were thrown on the floor but nothing else!
But whoever entered our room had left the two windows wide open and the heavy rain that morning had flooded the window sills etc. The room was eventually made up by the lady at the Bar-Reception. Here also: «All is well that ends well!».
Breakfast a la carte is served at the Bar-Restaurant-Reception area starting daily at 7.00am except weekends when breakfast starts at 8.30am. A guest who has not payed attention to this detail and descended the stairs to the Restaurant-Bar-Reception for Breakfast on Saturday morning at 7.00 am may have to return to his or her room (perhaps on the fourth floor). Nothing wrong with that either. A morning exercise will keep one fit for the rest of the day!
In ending this review I do recommend this establishment to a young clientele that feel fit and strong to climb and descend stairs and are used to go to bed in the early hours of the morning.

Room Tip: Ask for room/s on the lower floors

I stayed at the Hotel Lux for three days and i found the staff to be very helpful. luckily they could speak brilliant English.
The room was clean and a decent size.
The location is great as it is in the centre of Munich. You can easily walk to the main areas such as the traditional German market.
I had dinner at the restaurant and it was beautiful. My German colleagues have been there many times before as you always receive top quality food.
Overall i would recommend anyone to stay here as it has fab staff, great location, yummy food and clean rooms. What more can you ask for!

The location is great. You are in the middle of everything. Thats all the advantages of this hotel. Now the disadvantages: 1. It is not a hotel. It is a bar with rooms upstairs. the receptionist is the barman and the reception computer is on the bar between the whiskeys and the vodkas. 2. The hotel has no elevator. So imagine me and my wife carry our luggages on the 4th floor from the stairs. Or even imagine to get down and remember that you have forgotten something in the room. You have to go all the way up from the stairs. 3. The bathroom is smaller than a closet. 4. The heating is not up to you, because there is a central heating in the building and it was cold in Munich. 5. The cleaning lady cleaned our room in the morning and let the windows open. So we came back in the room on the evening and count the temperature of the room to be around 0 celcious. Can you believe it. She left the windows open in the middle of the winter.
And all that for 180euros per night. NO WAY!!!

After a night at the Platzl Hotel down the street from the Lux, we were forced to look elsewhere for a room because of room complications and a rude staff. However, this was very fortunate for us, because we discovered the Hotel Lux.

The staff was great, breakfast was delicious, and the location was wonderful, all for about half the price of the Platzl.

The only downside to this hotel was that there was no elevator, so it is definitely not for the rich and spoiled or older crowd. But the front desk is literally part of the bar that has a great night scene where we met a few Munich locals.

I would highly recommend this hotel to young travelers looking for a good time and dont want to break the bank. And it has Free WIFI!
