Description: At the Restaurant Alter Hof you can sit in the heart of Munich in a wonderfully renovated old building which has beautiful renaissance arches. You can enjoy bavarian melas, freshly and fondly prepared and served. The restaurant offers Franconian wines in different price categories which perfectly pair with the food. Downstairs there is a nice Winebar with a warm atmosphere.

Our internet booking from the UK went without a hitch. The staff are extremely pleasant and attentive. The choice of wine is excellent (we had a really good white Divino Grauer burgunder from the Franconia region.)
The menus is not over expansive and the food is excellent. Portions not too big though if you are hungry.

Actually, I'm from Russia. This year my family and I went to Munich for winter holidays in January. On the day of our arrival we came across this amazing place and we started to like it immediatly! All the stuff are very friendly. They helped us to make an excellent choice of dishes and were exctremely patient when we tried to cross language borders) The atmosphere is amazing! We had dinner in this restaraunt several times as we just couldn't resist the pleasure! The choice of local dishes is wide and everything is very tasty. Alter Hof is definetely worth visiting!

First, sorry that my photos are a little grainy, but you'll get the idea.

The Restaurant Alter Hof is situated in the center of Munich in a historical, rebuilt castle dating back to the 12th century. The atmosphere is a combination of rustic and modern, but the food and service are very traditional (and quite extraordinary).

The restaurant is something to take in when you first walk up the steps. The very high vaulted ceilings open the space and force the eyes to take a deep, soothing breath as they absorb the beauty of the architecture.

We were greeted by a very friendly host who quickly showed us to our table. Being typical Americans, we don't speak German... or any other languages for that matter, so there was a bit of a language barrier. However, everyone we encountered spoke enough English to help a couple of clueless Americans wade through the mouth-watering menu.

Everyone who works at the restaurant grew up in Franconia or still lives there. Culture and tradition are important parts of this restaurant and their pride in their region shows in everything that they do. Franconia is also known as a wine region, so wine connoisseurs will enjoy a visit here.

Our server was very helpful in recommending just the right wine to pair with our dinner. Unfortunately, I didn't note which bottle we selected! That said, it was an amazing pairing. We started our meal with an incredible beef tatar with lettuce, herbal oil and bread, followed by Franconian style braised beef with red cabbage and bread dumpling, and ox cheek and sirloin with braised vegetables and potato gratin.

The chef surprised us with a taste of sausage meatballs in broth, seasoned with salt, pepper and marjoram I believe. It was a tasty treat before our tatar starter.

We weren't able to actually figure out what "Franconian style" braised beef is, but the food was absolutely incredible. We believe it's how the beef is braised and the sauce that's used, but don't quote me on that.

It's a bit pricey, but worth every euro when you consider the atmosphere, the five-star service, and the incredible food. The serving sizes were a bit large, but we enjoyed every bite.

If we're ever back in Munich, we will definitely dine at Restaurant Alter Hof again. Highly recommended!

is the former imperial residence of Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor and consists of five wings Burgstock, Zwingerstock, Lorenzistock, Pfisterstock and Brunnenstock. Like most of the old town, it was rebuilt after being destroyed in World War II.

Alter Hof (Burgstock)
Archeological excavations have shown that a castle already existed there in the 12th century. After the first partition of Bavaria in 1255 the Alte Hof became the residence of Louis II, Duke of Bavaria in the then very northeastern part of the city. The castle was the first permanent imperial residence in the Holy Roman Empire under his son Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor.

The St. Lorenz Chapel at the north side, which was demolished in the 19th century, once housed the regalia of the House of Wittelsbach. After some uprisings the castle became too unsafe and the Wittelsbach dukes moved to the Residenz. From the 15th century onwards the castle was only seat of several governmental departments.

Nice place, quiet and confortable. The service is very good. Food is contemporary german, not your regular bavarian plate. The place is very nice, very well located, yet not in the noisy downtown.

We had some difficulty in finding the location of this restaurant, but we were glad we persevered. I visited first to make a booking and was pleasantly surprised at the interior, with vaulted ceilings which reminded me of a typical Ratskeller.
From the outset the staff were most friendly and welcoming. There was a good choice of Bavarian food, but an even better choice of wine, all from Franconia. Our main courses were beautifully cooked and staff ascertained that we were satisfied at all times.
A delightful meal in the most pleasant surroundings,
