During my hotel search, all the hotels within my price range, preferred area, and desired room were sold out because of the UEFA Championship League Final that was happening the weekend of my stay in Munich (May 19-21). I saw on TripAdvisor that this hotel chain received a Traveler's Choice Award, and received many positive reviews for their Sendlinger-Tor location, so it was my top hotel pick. I knew my chances of booking this hotel was very slim. Rooms were sold out on the hotel's website and other third party hotel sites. Although my search on booking.com came up with no rooms availble, weirdly I was able to secure my reservation through TripAdvisor's booking.com link.
Location - Centrally located in the Sendlinger-Tor neighborhood, within walking distance to U-bahn, and Tramway to get you to all the main tourist attractions. It is along a quiet street (Herzog-Wilhelm-Str.), facing a children's playground. The hotel is located near many shops, restaurants, and bars. Karlplatz and Marienplatz are 15-20 minute walks or 5 minute train ride from the hotel. My friend and I felt safe walking around the neighborhood during our days and evenings.
Room/Amenities - A great "no frills" hotel with contemporary "boutique" decor. The rooms were simply beautiful. The hotel seemed to be newly constructed or renovated, because the furniture, electronics, bathroom fixtures, etc. were up to date and modern. The room size was not up to American standards. It was rather small but still comfortable. My friend and I shared a double bed. Very nice linen! We both had our own duvet comforter. There was a flat screen television in the room with basic channels in German. I enjoyed the fish aquarium screen; very nice touch! FYI- beware there were a few channels that showed porn infomercials. The room does not have a phone to make calls out. Great bathroom with modern fixtures - rain shower, and vessel bowl sink. Water temperature was perfect!
The hotel lobby, and other common areas were clean, well maintained, and welcoming.
Food - On our first night we had drinks at the bar area. We had their grilled ham & cheese. Tasty, but nothing to rave about. Very limited selection of items on their menu, mainly bar fare.
Customer Service - Received excellent service from the reception staff! Staff was always visible and ready to help. They spoke good English. No complaints.
WIFI - Wifi is free in the lobby. Ask the reception staff for the access code. If you want wifi in your room, it will cost you 5 Euros, for 24 hours. I paid for wifi in our room, and the connection was okay for simple online activities, but not for streaming videos.
Overall, I'm very impressed with the value I got with the price I paid! While you may be thrown off (like I was) with the name "Motel One" and the 2-star rating, but please trust me when I say - you must stay at this hotel! It is very far from motel quality. I will consider this hotel chain again for future Germany trips.
