“Beautiful boutique hotel”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

We stayed here for one night having read good reviews about the place.
The rooms were clean, good sized, well decorated and the bathroom is great.
We had views of both castles. The bathroom had a great view of the Hohenschwangau and from our bedroom window we can see the Neuschwanstein Castle.
When we was there, it was cold and snowing, so the room felt very warm and cosy and my little one was entertained watching ratatouille!
Lovely hotel.

We had booked the King Ludwigs Winter tour package for a 2 night stay. We were given a room on the first floor in the corner so we could see both of the castles from our bedroom. It was wonderful to sit in bed and look at Hohenschwangau Castle! The Neuschwanstein castle was set up the mountain a little further but you could still look out the window and see it, esp at night when the lights are on and they are both illuminated. The room was clean and tidy and had plenty of room. Our bed was very comfortable and we slept very well. The bathroom was huge - dual sinks, shower and separate bath. Old fashioned perhaps but in keeping with the hotel and area. Our package included a four course dinner in the Schloss Lisl hotel across the road. The meal is served early but they do tell you that when you book. The meal itself was great and our waitress was very helpful. We had the dining room to ourselves which was very nice. The other restaurant was busy with day tourist and people on bus tours. If you want the better meals and service you book your own package - bus tour people are kept separate. Same at breakfast - we were in a very nice breakfast room with a wonderful buffet breakfast. The waitress came to our table and arranged coffee for us. Then she cooked our eggs as we wished and brought them to us. We walked up to both of the castles so we could take in all the great views but you could catch a bus or horse drawn carriage if you wished. Our tours were all arranged for us in the package which was really easy and nice. We spent the morning in the Neuschwanstein castle and then came down to look in the village and the museum. Our afternoon tour of the Hohenschwangau Castle was a private tour - just myself and my husband! Our guide was a very friendly man who was very happy to tell us all about the castle and anything else we asked about. When we left the castle just before 5pm we were picked up by a lovely man with the horses and carriage and were taken for an hours carriage ride down through the village and out to his farm. We were given snapps and taken through the horses stables and shown around. Then we hopped back into our carriage and were taken back up into the village to the Alpenrose am See restaurant for a 5 course dinner. Again we were the only ones in the restaurant but were made to feel very welcome. An ipad was on our table with our names on it -something different. This also had the menus for the restaurant on there and a couple of games for children. Great idea. There was one or two things we changed off the menu but that was not a problem. Our waitress again was very helpful. Once we had finished our dinner we walked back to our rooms and had a great nights sleep after a long hot shower. Check out the next day after breakfast was easy and quick. We had an amazing time here and will come back and do it all again. We were very happy with the package we booked and recommend it to anyone. There isn't anything much to do after dinner there but they do warn you on the website about that. You can go for a walk around if you wish as it is beautiful there but very cold at night. I saw people taking pictures of the castles later at night. Its a relaxing, quiet place so just go and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Especially after all the day tourists have left and it is all quiet and peaceful. It was wonderful to have the place to yourself. Just picture postcard perfect. Thanks to Vanessa for organizing all this for us and giving us so much information by email before we left Australia. A very well set out package that worked well.

Room Tip: We had a room on the first floor in the corner that we could see both of the castles from.

We puchased the 'King for Two Days' package and it worked out very well for us.

We had a deluxe room in the Jagerhaus - double aspect, each set of windows giving magnificent views of both castles (despite Neuschwanstein being covered in scaffolding!). Room was large and plush with an odd mix of furniture styles but comfortable nonetheless. The bathroom was large and well equiped but we had to keep the (shabby) curtain drawn as the window did not have obscure glazing and was quite close to pedestrian areas. The canopied bed was large and comfortable with very nice linens.

Our package included full breakfast - adequate but not the best we had on our road trip and two evening meals. The first dinner was in the Schloss Lisl hotel main building. Strangely this restaurant closed at an inconvenient 7pm ! We were in a separate, almost empty dining room. A massive tour group that was staying in the Schloss Lisl section was in another dining room. It was a fixed 3 course menu. However, the main course was not to our liking but the kitchen kindly made an alternative that was excellent. The service was friendly too.

Our second dinner was a 4 course affair in the Alpenrose Restaurant in a lovely c.1905 building by the lake, although the dining room strangely lacked any astmosphere. This restaurant stayed open until 10pm and was busier than the Schloss Lisl restaurant. However, again the main course of the fixed menu was not to our liking but again the kitchen very kindly offered us an alternative. However, this time it was distinctly average and not very enjoyable. The other courses though were good and we enjoyed those. The service was very friendly too.

The package included timed entries into both castles and entry into a very impressive museum about the Kings of Bavaria. The reception at the hotel was most helpful in organising these tickets and throughout our stay which made for a relaxing visit. It was quite good value all told, including secure complimentary parking.

What made it special though was being there after all the coach parties had gone and almost having the village and the castles to yourself - quite magical.

We stayed in a wonderful suite in the jagerhaus, lavishly furnished with a beautiful bathroom. We booked a package called 'live like a king for 2 days' which included entrance to both castles, the museum and evening meals. Staff at the hotel arranged tour times for us. The hotel caters for tour groups but in separate restaurant areas so breakfast and evening meal quiet and leisurely.
The whole area is quiet at night when the castles are closed so it was good to have a package with evening meal and lovely to walk around in the evening to the lake and to look at the illuminated castles. A very romantic location.

My room at the Jagerhaus hotel was large & beautifully decorated & comfortable & so I wished I could have stayed longer. I had a view of both castles which was amazing. Sadly the scaffolding obscured the facade facing the hotel. There was a desk, sofa and armchair. A cupboard with a safe & a large bathroom with double sink & large marble surround, separate shower & huge bathtub. The main downside was that they had a nice flat screen TV but only German channels which seemed odd as most of their customers were English speaking. CNN was available for a brief window during the day which didn't help if you wanted a news fix before bed or in the morning! And also the wifi was not available in the room but was in the main building lobby for 2 euros for 90 mins. The main building/hotel Lisl is opposite & is where reception & breakfast is. The staff were friendly. They gave me free access to a parking area just a few metres from the hotel. Curiously the hotel stops serving food at 6.30 pm! Luckily there are a few restaurants a little further down the hill that stay open later. Breakfast had quite a wide range of things on offer: cereals, bread, croissants, cheese and ham as well as an egg station for fresh omelettes or fried eggs. It's really convenient for the ticket office for the castles as well as the bus stop to take you up the hill if you are unable to walk up.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room so you get a view of both castles.

A perfect palce to be romantic and perfect for visiting the Ludwig's castles. We'been given a room that looked more like a suite than a normal double room. The atmosphere brings you back to old times ( apart for the service and the facilities ) and from each window we saw a different castle Hohenswangau and Neuschwanstein . The breakfast is complete and the staff is competent and well prepared to make you feel in a warm place ( even if outside is freezing ).
Good value for money a real experience for the senses.

I knew we were visiting castles but I felt like I was staying in one! We arrived late afternoon with just enough time to climb up to the old castle. There are so many day-trippers that by 6 p.m. the place had cleared out and it felt like we had the small town to ourselves. Dinner at the nearby restaurant was very good, great views across the lake.

Our room was truly amazing. It looked at Neuwanschtein and was decorated beautifully, reflecting the swan theme.

Room Tip: We really liked our ground floor room facing the castle.
