My husband and I are in our 70s and have been inside many castles, so we decided to walk up to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles and enjoy the exterior views but not take the interior tours. We decided that this museum might be the good way to enjoy the history of the area. It was a perfect choice: excellent displays, very good English audio guide included with your €9.50 ticket, and absolutely perfect views over the lake, which is right next door. The entire family history of the Bavarian kings is displayed in a pleasing long corridor, with just enough info to make you want to continue to the next member without drowning in too much data. While there are not rooms of original items, those which are included provide a perfect overview. And the room filled with displays and original film from WWII is a MUST NOT MISS. We found this part of the museum, which explained the roll of this family during and after the war, to be worth the visit. There is a very nice gift shop and a lovely cafe with amazing views.

Very informative and interesting. The information is just right and not overwhelming. This is just a few steps away from the 2 castles in Hohenschwangau and it's more economical to get the combo ticket to the Neuschwanstein, museum, and Schloss Hohenschwangau.

The museum tells the story of history of Bavarian kings. Audio tour is included. Going there simply is a lesson of Bavarian history. However, these are something you can learn from anywhere else and do not need to spend valuable and limited traveling time there and paid a entrance fee.

Please note that you are required to put your bags in the locker.

We got it in the SWAN package ticket, so it was ok. I would pay for that . But it is worth to go there, just to see some accessories and a movie about Ludwig plans and ideas. That is impressive.

This museum is a strange mixture. It uses very up to date professional skills, telling the history of the Bavarian family who were elevated to royalty at the start of the C19th and disappeared after the Great War. But it actually contains very few actual original artefacts, and apart from creating hagiographies of a series of fairly conventional individuals (sole exception, Mad King Ludwig) does not really amount to very much.
