We took the short (steeper) walk up to Hohenschwangau and arrived to the courtyard area. With a bit of time before our tour was scheduled to start we walked around the courtyard. We visited on a foggy day, so were unable to see the alps or Neuschwanstein. Be sure to check your ticket and be on time for your tour, otherwise, you might miss it.

Our guide was well spoken and led us through the various rooms of the palace. She was knowledgeable and it was interesting to learn about where King Ludwig II spent his childhood. We found a lot of the "modern" conveniences of the castle to be really neat.

After the tour we took the long walk down. For those that are interested, there is an option to take a horse and carriage ride.

Really pretty area and views from the castle. I really enjoyed how all the furnishings and paintings in the castle were original, very ornate.

When you exit the castle, you have to take the long walk (or horse buggy ride) down to the town, so you might as well take the short walk up to the castle. It's steep, but allows you to see different views of the other castle.

Highly recommend buying your tickets online. You don't have to print them, but you get to go in a really short line to pick them up. The line to purchase tickets there looked to be hours long.

This castle explains completely why "crazy" King Ludwig fell in love with the area and why he built Neuschwanstein. The original family home has some great artifacts and pictures which provide the back story.

This castle is a must to see. We were blessed with a very knowledgeable tour guide who was very fluent in English. She delivered the message of each room in a clear manner so that everyone could understand and appreciate what each room was used for. She was also very amenable to answering questions about each room that were not part of her script.

The castle itself is a great piece of architecture and must be seen to be fully appreciated. Photographs do not do it justice.

In many ways it is nicer than Neuschwanstein, more of a real family home, beautiful and well worth the visit, don't just see its more famous nephew.
