“Consider skipping”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

We left Munich at 9:00 am, got there by 11:00 and were already directed to the second overflow parking area. The number plates of the cars represented everything but German cars. This is tourist attraction #1 in Germany and it shows. The line to purchase the tickets to get into the castle was 90 minutes long (BEFORE YOU COULD EVEN GET A TICKET!!!). Once we got to the front of the line (about 12:30 PM) we got the earliest tour on offer for 4:25 PM (3 HOURS LATER!!!). The wait to take the carriage up the hill was another 60 minutes. If you thing going to the theme parks in Orlando in the summer is madness, this is worse. To top it off, only a dozen rooms in the castle were ever finished and the place is completely artificial, having been built at a time when castles were just as out of date as today. Buy a postcard in Munich and pretend you went and use your time to take the cable car up the mountain instead and do some hiking there. Your time will be better spent.

“Very Busy-Go Early or Off-Season”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

This is one of those "Can't Miss" sights, which is why it is soooo busy. So, book ahead of time, or go EARLY (ticket office opens at 8 AM). I don't know HOW busy it is during the off-season, but in August, it was as crowded as a Duck football game.

The tour is brisk, maybe 40 minutes, but worthwhile. Make time to hike around to the bridge over the waterfall. Also, the tour of Hohenswangau is also good, and if you are going to spend the day, you might as well do both.

Honestly....just book ahead. It really is NOT worth trying your luck at the ticket office....the queues are LITERALLY endless!
Even with pre-booked tickets we had quite a bit of queuing to do - but it was quite acceptable given the massive amount of tourists visiting the site. With the tickets in hand you are given the choice of either paying for a bus or horse-drawn carriage to take you up to the castle or else you can walk your way up. the signs say it will take approximately 30-40mins to walk up but realistically it's closer to 20mins and it is a very gentle incline making ti a really easy walk to the castle.

The tour of the castle itself was quite disappointing. The information given by the tour guides is straight out of a handbook with very little insight into the life and motivations of King Ludwig who commissioned the castle. Most of the tour consisted of the guide pointing out a statue of a swan, a painting of another swan, etc. etc.. You are also shown a very small part of the castle and you can hardly appreciate most of the rooms as they are packed with tourists.

I would still recommend going inside the castle though as the unique design of the building is really evident inside.

It is also definitely walking down the trail behind the castle for a few minutes to the bridge for spectacular views and some good photo opportunities - if you can elbow your way through the hordes of tourists for long enough to take a photo that is!
