This is justifiably a very famous location and well worth a visit. You need to be fit to visit as their can be steep climbs involved to get there.

To avoid the queues, which are enormous, go with an organised tour or get a voucher for a ticket from your hotel.

Also you need to realise that this is an over-visited attraction and they need to feed you through the building almost on a conveyor belt, so do your homework on the background and perhaps buy a book of the visit as there is little time to linger. The nearby Hohe Schwangau castle is less visited but just as interesting, so you can visit that while waiting for your time slot for Neuschwanstein,

Neuschwanstein Castle was worth the wait. If you don't have any special booking, they only sell you tickets for the day of your visit. We got to the castle after lunchtime, not knowing how much of a wait there would be, and had to get a 5:55pm ticket to tour the castle. Since we had almost 4 hours to wait, we also got the ticket for Hohenschwangau Castle, which is in the same area. My husband was very disappointed with this castle. We realized that you can go into the Hohenschwangau chapel and all the way into the courtyards without a ticket. As this was a summer hunting lodge, it was much smaller than Neuschwanstein and probably not worth buying the ticket to enter if you're already going to see Neuschwanstein. The grounds around Neuschwanstein are so impressive and are also free to visit. We wished we had known about all the different walking paths before we got there. We definitely would have spent more time doing some hiking instead of buying the Hohenschwangau ticket. You can also enter the Neuschwanstein courtyard without a ticket; you just can't go inside. Neuschwanstein was worth waiting, though! They offer shuttles or horses to take you up to the castles, but if you're in good shape, the walk is only about 15-20 minutes to Neuschwanstein (the brochure states 45 minutes - I guess if you walk veeeerrrrryyyyy leisurely, it could take you that long). Parking was about 5 euro for a car.

The line up to get tour tickets of this castle are not worth the price/time. We lined up at 1:30 PM, thinking we could get tickets to self-tour the castle without the English/German/Italian(etc.) guide. We found that you cannot self-tour and will not get entry without a ticket. The next tour available was not until after 6:00PM! We reserved tickets for 1st tour the next morning and had to line up by 8:20AM. The tour began at 9:20AM and was finished before 10:00am. The castle was never completed and is quite "new"(late 1800's), so there is not much to see.
If you are fit and are into a challenging hike up to the castle(bring water) do it yourself just for the views. From the castle hike to the bridge behind the castle for a great view and photos ops.

Best castle I've ever seen in Europe specially where and how it was built. But you need to plan the visit carefully. Firstly, make sure you join a tour that will arrange your trip specially your ticket to the castle. Secondly, you have to be physically fit to climb the steep terrain going to the castle. Take the bus going to the castle if you are not physically fit and do it as soon as possible as the lines for the bus takes time and have time to take pictures from a bridge.

The castle is beautiful as is the scenery around it. Our only disappointment was that we went early (9.15), parked and walked up to queue for tickets. The queue was quite long and a sign said approx. 20 min wait, as we queued we noted that the screens told us the next available English tour was at 12.55 !!! over 3 hour wait - we left the queue and went up to the castle in the bus (as my hubby is allergic to horses!) the walk around the castle was lovely and we really enjoyed it, little bit disappointed we didn't get inside but it gives us the excuse to go back again. A very enjoyable day for all ages.
