We stayed the night at the bed and breakfast Christine in Fussen, from our balcony we had the perfect back drop of Bavarian Alps. The next morning after a amazing brunch we drove 5 minutes to Hohenschwangau for the castles.

After parking we walked into the small little town and took a horse drawn carriage up the mountain to the castle. Neuschwanstein was so amazing you felt like you were in a fairy tale!

I recommend taking the horses up the mountain not only is it romantic and very cheap but the hike up the mountain by foot is very uncomfortable! Grab a guide book on King Ludwig II life before heading up in one of the town's shops, they explain alot on the tour but it was mostly about Ludwig and his relationship with Wagner which I didn't feel was enough about Ludwig's history.

Take lots of pictures outside of the castle on the walk up from where you are dropped off by the horses, it is the perfect photo opportunity! You cannot take photographs in the castle itself but once the tour had concluded we we out to one of the balconys and we able to get some beautiful photographs as well.

Afterwards walk back down to the town through the black forest. When you reach the village make sure to grab some lunch via the vending carts. We were more than happy with 2 bratwurst and italian ice cream vs the over priced restaurants.

After finishing out day at the castles we drove to Munich with the top down on out rental car through Bavaria, it put any views you see in the Sound of Music to shame, definately a must do if visiting Germany!

“Disney Castle”

The castle is beautiful. It was worth the long uphill hike! If you are traveling with smaller children or elderly, it may suit you to wait for the horse drawn carriage to take you up at a cost.

“Fairy Tale Castle requires stairmaster training”
Reviewed January 14, 2012

There are no elevators and multiple stairs to go up and the tour guides there herd the tourists quickly because they have many tourist groups going through the castle. There's no lingering and barely enough time to catch one's breath. It's worth seeing but a rushed attraction.

“Favourite Fairytale Castle”
Reviewed January 12, 2012

My first visit to Neuschwanstein was in spring, and this time I was lucky enough to see it in the snow... and it was magical! We took the horse carriage ride up to the castle, which is worth it as it's quite a long, steep path. You still have a short walk up to the castle itself so if you visit in winter, make sure that you wear shoes with good grip as, in the snow, the path became incredibly slippery coming down to the carriages again. The barcoded tickets make the guided tour of the interior very organised, just don't miss your allocated time :) In nice weather, the extra walk to Marion Bridge is worth the view of the castle from across the gorge. In the snow, the viewpoint just below the castle gives you a beautiful backdrop of mountains. In any season, it's a true fairytale castle!
