This hotel offers it all – beautiful rooms, efficient staff, nice surroundings, an excellent swimming pool & wellness area, as well as top notch wining & dining.
Our stay was at the beginning of December, and if we return to the Nuernberg area in 2009 this will be a hotel we will certainly stay at again. For a triple room we paid just under €100 a night (advanced booking rate), which for a 4* hotel of this calibre represents outstanding value.
Having stayed previously at the NH Nuernberg City, we were already familiar with the NH setup – stylish, contemporary hotels at reasonable base rate prices. While the interior of this hotel doesn’t come up to the extremely ‘polished’ standards of the purpose built NH City, it is still a beautiful place to be. The hotel was obviously refurbished at some stage to bring it up to NH standards, and the reception & bar areas, as well as the newer wing of bedrooms, are equally a match for the fantastic new NH City. However, there are a few areas that let this down, where it’s obvious that the hotel underwent a refurbishment. Completely out of place along the corridors are the enormous, heavy, industrial like steel doors. The winter garden is also pretty odd, you basically have to go up one level, cross through the “winter garden” (this covered outdoor area – pretty freezing in December – kind of like the smoking rooms you’d find in an Irish nightclub) and then access the lifts to bring you to your floor in the newer wing. This probably wouldn’t be too much of an issue for most people, but our group had two rooms, one in either side of the hotel. Getting from one to the other involved going downstairs, walking through the winter garden, and then having to go back upstairs again.
The bar was fantastic - really modern & really comfy. It’s by no means huge, maybe having seating room for 20, but there’s a great ambience in there. You’re not lost amid a huge crowd, and receive excellent service from the bartender, every order coming with some complimentary nibbles. The drinks selection is impressive, and while a little on the pricy side we found that it was worth it, as the standard is extremely high. We happily spent an hour or two here each evening before heading into Nuernberg for a night out. On one night we also tried some food from the bar menu, which was divine. Don’t bother rushing into Nuernberg to eat in the evening, eat here and chill out over a few drinks before heading out in search of some nightlife. One thing we did find though is that the barman did disappear on us a few times. Being such a quiet bar he would head away for 10/15 min at a time between orders, often leaving new customers waiting for his return and in one case leaving us unable to settle our bill that night as we had a taxi waiting on us and he was nowhere to be found!
Also during one night of our stay there was a black tie event on in the function room upstairs, so the usual barman was taking care of things up there. (If you’re considering a function in this hotel I couldn’t recommend enough, the function room presentation, piano player & fine selection of hors d'oeuvre [didn’t get to see the actual dinner] all looked first class) Anyways, what this meant was that an older gentleman was put on bartending duty. He was a bit taken aback by some of the more elaborate cocktail orders coming from our group, and the language barrier proved a bit of an issue, as did the use of a credit card at one point, but we took this in good humour - I’d say the poor guy was glad to see the back of us though!
The staff have to be commended across the board. They all have excellent English and went out of their way to be of assistance to us. There was a problem with the lock on one of our room doors and they immediately offered us a new room, no hesitation. They also lent us an adapter, solving another problem of ours – Caroline’s hair straightner not working! And upon returning to Ireland I realised that I had left my sat nav back in my hotel room. Some e-mail communication later and housekeeping had located it and Jennifer, from the front office, packaged it up extremely carefully and sent it home to me free of charge. This was really appreciated.
The location of the hotel is something that you have to consider when booking. If you’re looking for somewhere that’s a stone’s throw away from Nuernberg then this doesn’t quite fit the bill. It’s about a 20/30 minute drive right into the centre of Nuernberg, or alternatively you can take a 15/20 min train from Furth station, only 5 minutes or so from the hotel. Being right beside the forest is a beautiful place to stay though, and the road to the hotel leads nowhere else so traffic noise is non-existent. It’s almost like being in the middle of the countryside, even though really you’re just on the edge of an urban area. And a taxi home from Nuernberg after a night on the town costs in the region of €30, which is grand as long as you’re with one or two others. The peaceful location and great swimming pool/wellness area facilities are just something that can’t be replicated in a city centre hotel, no matter what your price range.
