The location of this place is its biggest plus: in the centre of the town. The food is " gut bürgerlich" but not particularly well or badly done. The staff are slow, unfriendly and easily annoyed if guests have special wishes.

If you want great Bavarian cuisine, I don't think this is your restaurant. We invited a local acquaintance to the Ratskeller but she said everyone had told her the food had gone downhill and we should go to the Munchner Hofbrau instead. The inner courtyard is for smokers, but the rest of the restaurant is non-smoking. It's full of lovely wood and quite dark but has a nice Bavarian atmosphere. Very pleasant.

However, we were disappointed with the food. My husband ordered the same thing he had yesterday at the Ratskeller: bratwurst with sauerkraut and a small salad. The bratwurst were bigger but not so flavorful and had chunks of fat in them. The sauerkraut was sweet, the first time we have had sweet sauerkraut. I had a traditional meatball inside cabbage leaves and it tasted as if it had been stewed way too long. Good boiled potatoes accompanied it. And the portion was huge for 6 euros. Our acquaintance had a vegetarian broccoli and cauliflower smothered in cheese and also accompanied by 3 big hunks of boiled potato. It looked better cooked than I like my veggies.

So if you are after quantity rather than quality, this restaurant is for you. Also, the menu is a lot longer here with more vegetarian choices. Our bill including water (3 different kinds) was less than 30 euros. But we were sorry we hadn't returned to the Ratskeller, atmosphere or not.
