We stayed here for 7 nights on a half board basis in July 2014. Not being very fluent German speakers we were a bit concerned we might have difficulties with menus etc. but we need not have worried. From the moment we entered the hotel we were made feel very welcome and throughout our stay we were truly treated as guests and not just paying customers.
The front desk staff had a friendly greeting whenever we passed and anything we requested was met with a very helpful attitude and response.
The restaurant, looking out over the lake, was beautifully appointed and the waiting staff looked after us (and all diners) with great care and attention and in a very professional manner. Menus in English were available each evening and several dining room staff spoke quite good English. Weather permitting there is an option to have breakfast or dinner on a balcony above the beautiful lake and overlooked by the massive Zugspitz mountain.
Breakfast offered a wide buffet choice of juices, cereals and freshly cut fruit, a range of breads and bread rolls, hot and cold foods from the buffet and a chef present to cook eggs and omelets to ones taste.
Dinner was amongst the best we have experienced on half-board deals. A salad bar opened proceedings followed by a nice starter buffet before the waiter served soup. Main course offered a vegetarian and three other options each evening and never repeated during our seven night stay. To round off there was a choice of two waiter served deserts and/or deserts from the buffet and a cheese selection.
Facilities at the hotel included a wellness centre and a small pool but these were complemented by some beautiful (indoor and outdoor) relaxation areas with comfortable furniture and of course the Eibsee with its beaches, lakeside walks, boats etc.
Within a few minutes walk of the hotel door there is a cable car which can lift you to the summit of the Zugspitz in ten minutes, or a train which does the same thing at a more leisurely pace - €51 round trip. On arrival at the hotel we were given a "Grainau Card" which gave us free travel on buses and trains between Eibsee and Garmisch, and various places in between, throughout our stay. We found this very useful for getting to and from attractions in the valley - only drawback was that the last bus left Garmisch at 19.10 so in effect, unless you have a car you are trapped in Eibsee in the evenings. But there is a cosy bar when dinner is over.
The hotel is beautifully located. Rooms are large, clean and comfortable with nice balconies. Armchairs and coffee table are provided both in the room and on the balcony. Our room faced the Zugspitz and presented some spectacular early morning and late evening views. Many of the rooms have lake views.
We loved the room, the location and the food but the most memorable feature of the hotel is the ability of the staff to make their guests feel welcome. We feel we must go back.
