Reviewed June 16, 2013

We stayed 3 nights at this hotel located a short, downhill, 15-minute walk from the train station. The room facing the mountains was bright and clean, but we were disappointed with a number of things. The combination body soap, shampoo and conditioner container in the shower stall was empty and remained empty for our entire stay. Luckily, we brought along our own. There was 1 tissue in the Kleenex box and it remained that way for our entire stay. Safety deposit boxes have to be one of the simplest things in a room to use; however, we could never get the medieval contraption in our room to work. No wifi in the room. There are slippers and bathrobes available for guests, but you have to ask for them to be delivered to your room. The hotel operates on the premise that "we have everything, but if you want it, you've got to ask for it." The Thursday night buffet was wonderful, but again, you will get the dry leftovers mixed in with next morning breakfast items. Some reviews say the staff is friendly and polite while other reviews say they are unfriendly. Well, they're both. When you address a staff member directly they are very polite. See them in the dining room or hallway and you don't exist. It's this Dr Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde behaviour that is the root of the conflicting reviews. One explanation for the mixed reviews on Trip Advisor is that this hotel is a study in social hierarchy in conservative rural Germany. From the front desk to the apprentice server(s) every knows their place and is interacted with accordingly. Interestingly, in the morning, the presumed grand-daughter breezes in through the front door, ignores everyone, grabs a refreshment from the bar and breezes back out never acknowledging staff members who she must know. This sort of thing is something you would never witness nor ever should witness at a hotel such as the Regent Berlin, Lindau Reutemann or Cologne Excelsior. As the presumed grandmother, I'd put an immediate end to such behaviour. As a guest I don't want to see this sort of thing. Would we return, probably not. But, we understand clearly why there are such divergent reviews regarding this hotel. It's a 3-star hotel and nothing more.

i returned to stay at the hotel last month and once again everything was first class. the breakfast bar is absolutely great as with the evening meals. the staff are so friendly and helpful. with the hotel being situated in the centre of garmisch and it is only a few minutes walk from the railway station makes it very easy for access to the local shops etc. the hotel itself is very clean and the rooms are always cleaned thoroughly each day. the hotel rates for such a great place is very reasonable. i have already booked a return trip for next year. all i can add is that i recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in beautiful garmisch.

Room Tip: try to book a room overlooking the mountains, especially the zugspitze as the views are breathtaking...

Beautiful view of Zugspitze from your bedroom window, delicious breakfast and friendly staff. Within walking distance from train station and all of downtown. Only complaint would be lack of wifi in room. Worked great in lobby but in room was spotty. Loved staying here!

The hotel is clean and in a good location. It's a 3 star hotel, not more. If possible, don't take demi-pension as the choices are very limited. The food itself is fair, nothing to write home about. The wait staff is not particularly friendly.

Room Tip: There are a few larger rooms but definitely ask for a room with a balcony.

Stayed here for 3 nights with a group of 43. Check- in was unbelievably easy and organized for me, the trip leader. Location was excellent--near grocery stores, the train station and shopping. We had dinner every night at the hotel and the staff and food were wonderful. I had a a very small single in the older part of the hotel. It was OK and had a balcony (great for cooling wine and soda). It would have been nice to have a luggage rack or two to place my suitcase on since the room was pretty small. It was a little hard to regulate the temperature of the water in the shower. Given the choice, I would ask for a room in one of the newer wings--bigger rooms with more amenities. The rooms in the new wings were more the size of American hotels.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony in one of the new wings. If you are looking for an excellent tour gui...

I loved the location of this friendly hotel since it was an easy walk to the train station, shops, Sprenzel's Ski rental shop in Garmisch. Since we were a group of 30, there was a difference in the size of the rooms that were given to members of the group, from smallish to quite spacious, but all were beautifully appointed with modern, clean bathrooms. The receptionists at the front desk were extremely helpful and accommodating. They had a lively bar that was filled nightly with locals. Many in the group were pleased with their spa services. The only negative we had was the food on the meal plan. Breakfast was adequate, with the same daily choices of fruit, juices, breads, yogurt, eggs, bacon and cereals. We paid extra for 4 courses at dinner and were not happy with having to pick from only 2 entree choices. The selections didn't reflect what we expected as regional fare, but often consisted of a small quantity of shrimp or meat filled out with inexpensive pasta. They had a salad bar in the dining room for other patrons not on the meal plan, but it was an extra charge if we had a bowl. Many of the group chose to abandon the prepaid meal and go out to a restaurant at least one night. Not a glowing endorsement of the dinners offered us.

Room Tip: The newer wing had the largest views and balconies. Ask for a mountain view.

This is a very beautiful hotel with antique looks, i.e. furniture everywhere. Our room was quite big (unfortunately we were there only for a night) had a balcony which was nice. We probably would not have mind had we had to stay locked in the hotel but for Zugspitze! The lady at the reception (later I learnt, she is the owner's daughter) was very helpful. It is walkable from the railway station and also towards the centre of the town- which we did till late at the night. Overall, great place in a cute little town.

Room Tip: Take a room with balcony or mountain view.
