“Beautiful Views”
Reviewed October 4, 2006

Our family has just returned from a wonderful 10 day vacation in Bavaria. My husband, both sets of grandparents, and I traveled to visit our daughter (who is studying abroad for the year) to celebrate her 21st birthday.

Edelweiss Lodge and Resort met our expectations during our two night stay. While the reservation process was tedious, I received prompt email responses. The lobby décor made a wonderful first impression as you enter the Lodge, you just wanted to sink into one of the comfortable sofas or rocking chairs and enjoy the fireplace. We stayed during the last few days of our trip and were pleased to have TV with programs in English and laundry facilities. The pool and hot tub were extras we never had a chance to use, but loved the designated adult only option. The beautiful mountain ranges surrounding the lodge were impressive. Our room was a standard room, on par with any Holiday Inn. The resort was sold out for the timeframe we were there. There were many families with children and it was quite noisy at times. Our first morning I was awakened at 7am by children yelling in the hall/next room. The majority of restaurants/bar facilities closed by 22:00, so it was a bit noisy until everyone returned to their rooms. I would suggest requesting a room towards the end of the hall.

The staff was always gracious and helpful. The gift shop was the point of contact for assisting with the booking of tours. Due to our short stay we were unable to take advantage of the tours, but a wide variety of tours were offered.

I agree with the other posts regarding the food. The buffet food was mediocre and warm at best. The meal was probably the worst we had during our entire trip. The next morning the line for the breakfast buffet stretched through the lobby. Since the buffet dinner was not to our liking, we chose to eat breakfast in town.

We stayed at the Edelweiss in early Sep 2006, also after it first opened (Nov2004). It has a lot going for it. Clean, large rooms, an absolutely superb staff, access to great tours of many of the local attractions. Our "basic" room in 2004 was larger than most US hotel doubles, and our "junior suite" while not really a suite, it had a nice sitting area. All of the rooms have a fridge and coffee pot, and two sinks. In the standard room, the extra sink is in an alcove along with the coffee pot and fridge, in the suites, there is usually an additional bath room. There is a very convienent laundermat in the basement, and there is underground parking so you don't have to leave your car out in the winter. Room rates are very reasonable. It is designed primarily so that service men have a place to visit and relax with their families, so there will be lots of kids- there is no A/C so you need to leave the balcony door open in warm weather-- but then so does everyone else so it can be a little noisy.
Now for the down side. While room rates are reasonable some of the other prices are not. Prices for souvenirs in the stand in the lobby are generally higher than downtown. Soft drinks at "The Point" are more expensive than on the economy ($1.75) and, amazingly, $.60 more than from the vending machines in the halls. Dining is limited, and generally overpriced and hours are erratic. There are three choices-- "Zuggy's Base Camp" in the basement which used to have a wide selection of reasonably priced sandwiches, burgers and schnitzel, but now carries primarily overpriced pizza, "Market Square"- a cafeteria style dining room that has food that can best be described by three words-- tepid, wet and congealed and "Pullman Place"- a sit down restaurant that has supringly good food at reasonable prices. Avoid the $15 buffet like the plague and go to Pullman Place. Sadly, its closed half the week and jammed the other half. By the way, breakfast options consists of an $8 trip to the buffet, or, for $4, you can have any 2 cold items plus coffee---which should be any items in the buffet because none are warm! Plus, in the buffet you are constantly seranaded by a recording of a crow cawing and the yowling of a cat in distress-- someones lame idea of atmosphere.
It is a 20 Minute walk to the center of town and there are some great restaurants there (Ilse Golden Angel for one) so, if you cannot get into "Pullman Place", walk or drive downtown.
So --for a great value for a place to stay, with a clean new rooms and a staff that is tops anywhere---this is a great place. Just stop at Tenglemans or the Esso station and buy some softdrinks for the fridge and plan on eating out.

A very nice hotel, although lots of people and kids running around. It is difficult to contact the hotel, we had to email for a reservation. We had a Jr Suite, which was spacious and even had an extra half bath. One complaint was there is no individual climate control in the rooms, it was rather warm when we were there and our room got hot. We asked for a fan, but it took several hours for them to bring one. I don't recommend the restaurants in the hotel, all seemed very overpriced. I wouldn't recommend this hotel if you want a quiet getaway- the lobby, restaurants, and pool were all crowded. A nice place for families.

Staying at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort was such a beautiful experience. The snow outside and the large fireplace inside with rocking chairs and a family atmosphere for Americans away from home was comforting to the soul. The rooms are magnificent with views of the mountains. The town of Garmisch is so clean and easy to get around by bus or on foot. Warm boots with tread are a must. Cafes, restaurants, shops, street vendors selling wine and brots, snow falling, church bells ringing, people walking their dogs - it is a beautiful scene and I'm so happy to have experienced it. Having the Edelweiss Lodge to swim and wash laundry and watch some American tv and eat American food is a touch of home. Riding a horse drawn carriage at night was great and riding sleds at the ski slopes was so much fun. Taking the train to nearby towns was a great adventure also. Seeing senior citizens cross country skiing everywhere is really inspiring to get out and enjoy life.

We are returning in June with 2 of our grandsons and I'm so looking forward to it!!

We just returned from a 10 day stay at this military resort! We have nothing but great experiences from this resort with one exception (stay away from the buffet!) It is overpriced and the food is mediocre at best! Eat at the steakhouse for the same price or less! It was excellent! The hotel itself has wonderful accomodations - we had a junior suite and loved the fact that we had 2 bathrooms! The view was amazing, everything spotless and comfortable. The spa and pool area are nice, but we did not use it as there were alot of children playing ball and such and swimming around the hot tub! They were having a great time though!!! This place is perfect if you are travelling with children, it appeared that there was alot for them to do! We would definately return to this property for future vacations!
