“Zugspitz excellent, Garmisch classic too many roads”

We've just spent a long weekend here. My son is an expert boarder, I'm an intermediate skier. Our first day it was cold and cloudy and we went up the Zugspitz. The snow there was beautiful due to the altitude and the pistes were largely empty with no lift queues. The pistes were all blue to red but no poling required and there wasd powder to the sides of the pistes to play on. Had an excellent pint of Franziskaner weissbeer Royal at the glass enclosed bar mid pistemap. It was very cold and the altitude tired me out but an excellent day.
Sunday was surprisingly sunny so lots of queues at the classic area. We had expected this area to be better but were disappointed as the harder runs were icier than at the Zugspitz and we seemed to spend alot of time on narrow green roads requiring poling.
If you don't mind the cold (I used a neoprene facemask and balaclava) the Zugspitz has the better skiing (on this weekend anyway).
Bavaria is beautiful though so I'll be back.

The Classic area is Easy to get to by road or rail. Good red runs and two very good blacks, Kandehar and Horn. Not too many beginner slopes though. Piste 16 can be fantastic after snowfalls, no snow machines on this run, unfortunately it has a T-bar lift so no rest for tires legs. Lots of restaurants and prices are fair. On the negative side the staff at the hausberg ticket office is an unfriendly bunch. they are not likely to dish out any advice regarding ticket purchase options. They have actually overcharged me twice for an afternoon pass, so check your ticket before you leave the window.

beautiful runs, and don't miss the kandahar run, it is wonderful, quite long and difficult.
Covered chairlifts are also a great bonus in this ski area .

My family has been coming here for over a decade. Both our kids always have a great time skiing, sledding, hiking and of course eating (more great restaurants than hours in a day). The Garmisch-Partenkirchen area offers some of the best skiing in the Alps, with a wide variety of slopes/runs/areas. For the truly adventurous get a regional pass which will allow you to ski the entire area (including Austria)!!
