To see where the 1936 Wnter Olympics were held is pretty cool! I is much as it was back then. There are ski slopes and a killer sledding slope on the grounds that are worth a try. W don't ski, but the sledding was out of this world fun. Can be dangerous, especially by American standards. Just be prepared to bail off your sled at any given moment!! I suggest getting a ticket that allows you to figure it out on the first run, then give yourself at least a 2nd run down to get one solid trip down the hill. BRING YOUR CAMERA! The ride up the mountain alone is great & all you need to do if you aren't interested in sledding.

In the summer months, you can go up the mountain and walk around up top, ride back down or hike back down if you have the time. There is a restaurant up top, not sure their hours. There is also a Sommerrodelbahn: http://members.gaponline.de/sommerrodelbahn-gap/

While the stadium is worth a visit, our kids were more excited about the luge across the parking lot. They rode it over and over while my husband and I enjoyed a beer while watching them. We actually enjoyed a couple of trips down the luge ourselves but the kids didn't want to stop. They also had trampoulines with harnesses that the kids enjoyed during a break from the luge. We also saw a large public swimming pool at the same area and thought it would have been a fun afternoon activity if we'd had suits with us. Maybe next summer we'll schedule that for a "rest day" between "tourist days".

I spent a few years in Garmisch as a youngster and remember watching ski jumping events here. This time, I was more interested in the history surrounding the 1936 Olympics. Adolf Hitler opened the Olympic games from the balcony at the base of the ski jumps. There is a picture of him and Rudolf Hess. Glad those days are behind us! The stands have seen better days...worth stopping to see.

The stadium itself is quite deteriorated and looked in need of repair, the ski jumps are world class though, and the restaurant was lively and busy, filled with happy people enjoying the sunshine. We were able to watch some kids practicing their jumps when we were there, which was quite exciting.
