“Take the train or the cable car to ski above the clouds”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2013

Very high, very scary cable car ride - we only did it once, and took the 45 minute train every other time! The runs are slightly disconcerting, stating blue, but ending up as steep narrow reds - so nervous beginners beware! The restauraunt at the top is lovely, and the views are spectacular. Stays open until the end of April too!

“A must see!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2013

We took the cog train up the mountain to the summit and ski station. Just be ready to stand during ski season as the train gets full fast. At the top, the views are unmatched and you can take a cable car to an even higher peak and have lunch. I can't say enough about he views and the experience!

“Austria side, rented car in Munich”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

Planning to visit from Munich we considered day trips,Salzburg, Zugspitze and castles. But we rented a car as there is no extra fee [most cases] to drop car off in different German city and decided to drive to Salzburg then Innsbruck [we chose Innsbruck over Garmisch and castles] then to Lichtenstein, then Swiss border and up to Bregenz Austria, then to Rothenburg. No regrets. The drive up through the Austrian side was beautiful with Alps on both sides.

“Amazing views”

€40 is not cheap, but if you have good weather it is totally worth it. I would recommend raking in Eibsee and taking the train up from there and the cable car back.

“On Top of the World”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2013

Depending on the weather, this is a one of the most incredible things to do while in southern Bavaria. Before you shell out the money for the round trip ticket on either the cable car or gear rail, check the current weather conditions for the summit at one of the base stations or a local hotel. If the conditions at the summit are poor, delay your trip!

We chose to make the ascent from the Eibsee station near Garmisch via cable car. Parking at the base station was free and plentiful. The cable car ride is a 10 minute trip that will simply amaze. Enjoy phenomenal views of the Eibsee (lake) and countryside as you wisk past the tree lines and rise above the clouds to the snow capped mountaintop. At the summit awaits a beautiful complex that houses a cafe, restaurant, beer garden, gift shop, viewing platform and connecting lifts to the various ski runs. Stepping out onto the vast viewing platform allows you to take in the breathtaking views of the mountains and glaciers below. You even cross over into Austria as you stroll around the deck. Back inside, you can enjoy a beverage or meal at the glass-walled cafe or restaurant and gaze out at the mesmerizing beauty of the mountains.

Allow 2 hours for the entire experience and be sure to dress for appropriately as the temps are very cold regardless of the time of year.
