We stayed two nights and were surprised with the large, updated room - we were in a b&b but had the amenities of a hotel. The room was extremely spacious and the bathroom was the largest we had encountered in our 3 weeks of travel. Because our room faced the back, we did not get to see the cows with the clanging bells walk down the street in the early morning ! I would have enjoyed seeing this ! We stayed at the end of May and had no problem finding a parking spot right out front. The breakfast was truly enjoyable - the spread was very large and definitely tasty. The biergarten was not open due to the weather, but the staff at the front desk were always helpful with any questions we had. We loved being right in the middle of Partinkirchen, yet having a quiet and relaxing location.

My experience was very good overall, similar to what other reviewers have already written, so this hotel seems to be consistently good. I had a comfort double with a balcony facing to the back. The room itself was large, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The bathroom was likewise spacious and spotlessly clean, with only a shower however. The room had a view toward the Zugspitze and other mountains around Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It also overlooked the beer garden, which would likely be noisy on a summer weekend but on an early June mid-week evening was not bothersome at all. In fact it was a bit of a bonus, because for about an hour early in the evening a rather good Bavarian accordian band was playing in the beer garden - a free concert.

As one would expect in a good German hotel, the buffet breakfast was extensive and very good.

Another positive is that they are about a block from the main shopping street in Partenkirchen. If you like to have picnic lunches or suppers, as I do, this is convenient because you can buy your supplies there, from the excellent bakery and good grocery store about two blocks away from the hotel.

The only negative was the parking situation in the area. When I arrived every parking space for two blocks around the hotel was occupied. The hotel has some free onstreet parking, but it is very limited. They also have underground parking available at an extra cost of 6 Euros/day, which I used and which worked very well. The main issue, however, is finding a place to park while you check in if you arrive when the onstreet parking is full (which is most of the time). As far as I could tell, the hotel doesn't have an unloading zone, which they badly need (or if they do have one, it's not marked very well). I finally found a 30-minute zone about a block away which had a parking space free, so I could park there until I checked in and could move the car to the underground cark park.

We rented three rooms for 3 nights for our family. Two of them were called an apartment, which meant that the two rooms also jointly had an additional door to the main hallway. One of those rooms had a beautiful balcony view and the other faced the front. The third rooms was also on the 2nd floor and had the great view of the mountains to the south. Watching sunsets from the balcony was a treat.

The rooms were spacious, clean, and had ample closet and storage space. The warm weather while we were there made the duvets seem quite warm, but having merely a top sheet on the bed apparently isn't an option there. You can hear the frequent church bells, but we enjoy the sound and it didn't disturb our sleep.

The breakfast buffet was good, but the 8:00 a.m. opening hour made us very rushed to eat before leaving for our days' activities. An earlier start would have been appreciated so that travel to the King's Castles or the Zugspitze could begin earlier as well. We enjoyed the biergarten on Saturday evening when they had Bavarian music and 2 boys doing traditional dancing. The service there was adequate, but somewhat brusque. We did not do half board because we often just wanted a smaller evening meal.

On the day of our arrival, the person working reception spoke somewhat less English than the staff on the other days, so we were fairly limited in obtaining information about the area. We also were disappointed to learn that the wi-fi is provided only with a substantial surcharge.

On the whole, the Schatten is a pleasant typical Bavarian hotel and we enjoyed our stay there.

Located in Partenkirchen across from Garmisch, the Hotel Schatten provides large comfortable rooms with balconies. Rooms are decorated in a typical updated Alpine style with light colored wood. They feature ample storage space and seating space. As an example, our room for two had three chairs in the room and table with 2 chairs and chaise lounge on the balcony area outside. The double beds were the typical style of two twin beds in the bed frame and were comfortable. We prefer extra pillows and were given them. Room rates include breakfast which offers a selection of meats, cheeses, breads, hard boiled eggs, the ability to order two scrambled or fried eggs (everyday except for Wednesday), jams, yoghurt, cereal, tea and coffee. On site parking is free of charge, which is another plus if you’re driving. Your stay will also include a tourist card which gives you among things free use of bus transportation around the cities of Garmisch and Partenkirchen.
There is a restaurant on-site as well as an outdoor beer garden which serves regional specialties. Guests have the option of ordering half-board which included a three course meal (soup/salad, choice of two entrees and desert) which at the time of our stay was 18 Euro per person. The food was quite good and choices usually included two different kinds of meat or fish. One night we ordered something called the King Ludwig which had pork, beef and turkey medallions in a delicious sauce. They also offer a Baviarian night on Saturdays and Tuesdays with Bavarian music and Schuhplatters, traditional German shoe slapping dancers. If you plan to do this, make sure you make a reservation in advance.

While some reviewers complained about the staff, we found them to be pleasant. A simple greeting of Gruss Gott goes a long ways anywhere in Bavaria. Also some reviewers said there was confusion going into the restaurant which we avoided by giving our room number at breakfast and saying we had half-pension when going into dinner for the first time.
Internet is available for a fee via T-Mobile Hotspot pass. While another user complained it was slow, we have high speed internet at home and this was just as fast. I’m not sure if you purchase a T-Mobile Hotspot pass in advance that it is cheaper, but here are the rates at the time our stay (24-hour pass for 4.95 Euros, 600 minute pass for 19.95 Euros, 30 day pass for 34.95 Euros). If you’re traveling around, you may want to check and get the 30 pass as it is valid wherever there is a T-Mobile Hot Spot).
Our only negative about the hotel was the cigarette smoke. While the hotel says it is smoke free and guests cannot smoke in their rooms, they are permitted to smoke on their balconies and outside in the beer garden. This becomes problematic when windows are open as the smoke smell enters the rooms when the windows are open. I suppose in the winter this is not a problem, but in the summer it does. We visited when there were record hot temperatures and had to sleep with our windows and door open as the heat was stifling. If you’re like us when you travel to the mountains, you like the fresh air and want to sleep with the windows open.

We stayed here for a night this June . The room we stayed in was tidy, spacious opened out to the terrace . The views are beautiful all around town .The restaurant in particular is a must try for all who' d like a taste of Bavarian cuisine and entertainment. Just a word of caution --almost all brochures we found in the hotel were in German so if you are from a foreign country please get all information before coming here. Also vegetarians would find it a hard time to find something on the menu. Breakfast is delicious with lots of variety

Room Tip: We stayed in a south facing double room with terrace for the terrace and the views

We would highly recommend this hotel. The booking we made was very reliable and check in was very simple. The rooms were spotless and the staff very accomodating. They had several ideas on the best things to do within walking distance and several brochures to choose from. he SPA was was of the best we have ever been to. Don't forget that clothing is optional and swimsuits not recommended. We will visit Gashof Shatten again.

Room Tip: Any room would be a good room at this hotel.
