Apart from the fact that this is where the Passion Play is presented, the theatre doesn't have any special interest. It is just a regular theatre with not that comfortable seats and open to the elements at one end. The interest lies with the play and anything your guide can tell you about it and the people who act in it.

I was at the Passion Play Theatre in August 2001. I had the privilege of watching the story of Christ's last days as portrayed by the townspeople. The Theatre, at the time was open aired. Atop the entrance of the building was a sculpture of a cross with all of the townspeople coming to Christ for His divine intervention and preservation of their people. The play started at 0930 then broke for lunch at 1230. It resumed at 3 pm and went until 630 pm. It was all in German, but that didn't matter. Photography of the play itself wasn't permitted in 2001, I'm not sure if that has changed. If you are in Oberammergau and have the ability to see the Passion Play... DON'T MISS IT!!!!

It's impossible to make your way to Oberammergau and miss the Passion Play Theatre, the very reason why this village is visited by millions of travellers.
The theatre can be visited also in rainy weather, as it is covered.
The guided tour offers extensive explanations about the Passion Play and there are many displays that enable the visitor to understand what all the fuss is about.
I recommend to visit also the backstage and see the many costumes used in the play and understand a bit about the organization of this truly amazing event.
