Internal adornments were fantastic and history of the Church most interesting - suggest use a local guide to explain all

The parish church of Sts. Peter and Paul is a beautiful Rococo style church, and is well worth the visit when stopping in Oberammeragu. As It is a place of worship, please be respectful on your visit…and take a few minutes to use its quietness for prayer and reflection. You enter the church through the side courtyard, which also houses the cemetery. Cemeteries in Germany are well maintained gardens and the cemetery is well worth a look also. The church itself, completed in 1742, is quite beautiful. The painting at the high altar honors the rosary, and the painting on the front domed ceiling shows the rosary being given to St. Dominic. As you wander around and view the ornate high and side altars, and the beautiful fresco work, you will notice that the church is home to many relics of martyrs of the church (these can be seen behind glass at many of the altars). The reliquary with the remains of St. Amandus is in the altar to the right as you look to the front of the church, known as the altar of the crucifixion (St. Amandus died about 650 AD, and is the patron saint of brewers and breweries). The rear of the church includes two balconies, with the upper being the organ loft. Many of the pews show grafitti (names, dates, initials, etc.) that actually go back several hundred years. The loftiness of the church served to take your breath away. I would have enjoyed attending mass here had our schedule allowed for it.

When going to Oberammergau, this church is worth visiting besides the beautiful painted houses. The ornate Rococco interior is very beautiful to look at, but if you have visited the Wieskirsche or Ettal Monastery, then the interior of this church has a similar style, well at least to my untrained eye. If you have visited those 2 places, then this church may be skipped if you are lacking time while visiting Oberammergau, but still worth visiting regardless.

When in Oberammergau ensure you walk through the town, and after admiring the painted houses, get to the Church. The exterior is nothing special but the interior is magnificient with a number of wonderful paintings on the ceiling and no shortage of baroque ornamentation..

This was a beautiful church. The frescos were breath taking. We were left in awe of the beauty between the paintings and the wood carving details to the gold detail. Magnificent!
