We were looking for somewhere to wander around for a few hours and we found everything and more here. It was a Sunday so the shops were closed but there were plenty of bars, restaurants and ice cream parlours open. Lots of Families wandering around, tourist groups and locals making this little town quite busy, saying that it never felt hectic or stressful.

The buildings are charming, decorated in fantastic colours and designs, there is a connection to violin making and there is a museum in the town.

We parked in the bahnhof and walked to the town which was only a few hundred metres. Like most towns there is a railway station, wanderweg and plenty of places to cycle.

Mittenwald is really charming. It simply has everything you expect to find in a Bavarian town: houses with front paintings, a baroque church, a lovely pedestrian zone with a clean stream flowing through, traditional inns and excellent food, beautiful alpine surroundings.
Enjoy a stay!

Beautiful walk passing the two lakes and having a Paulaner in Mittenwald.......the city where violins are made.

Mittenwald is a quiet town nestled between mountains, trees, lakes and hours of beautiful treks. My boyfriend and I spent 10 days holidaying here and could not recommend it more. We can suggest taking a guided tour of Mittenwald to learn about it's history (there is an English speaking tour once a week beginning outside the tourist office), hiking, renting bikes locally and cycling the endless bike trails, exploring the nearby forests which are well sign posted and often lead you to beautiful lakes where on a hot day a dip is a must! (Recommend bringing swim gear, snacks and drinks any time you leave Mittenwald as the beautiful areas tend to keep you hiking for hours and best to have supplies packed!) Taking a trip to the near by spirit gorge which to our surprise was free and well worth a visit and a cable car trip up the top of the Karwendal is a MUST.
The town of Mittenwald itself is a pleasure to amble around. There are small tourist shops all worth a look, the usual necessity shops such as supermarkets, pharmacies and bakeries, plenty of lovely places to eat either a light lunch or a full dinner. I do recommend having a slight knowledge of the German language as not all restaurants supply an English menu!!! However it's a great opportunity to randomly pick something from a menu that you don't understand...we were never disappointed with the result!!!
There is a beautiful park at the edge of the town with crazy golf if you fancy an afternoon of fun! We recommend buying a fresh meat bap from the butcher near the pedestrian street and bringing it to the park-makes for a very tasty, extremely good value lunch and the ducks will be happy with any left overs!
The train station in Mittenwald allows you to explore other near by towns or why not cross over into Austria and visit Innsbruck which is well worth the short journey.

Mittenwald is a hidden gem and if you're looking for a town to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse yourself in natural beauty and fresh air then this is the town for you....
