Mittenwald was a delight to visit. We went on a train trip from Seefeld in Austria and it was so beautifully decorated. Painted buildings, and a lovely church. The church inside had wonderfully painted ceilings and there was a small group of musicians practicing and it was lovely to hear the music they were playing. We liked the littel stream that was running through the streets of the old town. There were many shops, and a lovely little music shop (Mittenwald being famous for violin making). Such a lovely day out.

This was our third visit to Mittenwald. We find this a very special atmosphere old town with various attractions in close proximity. Various open air cafes and restaurants are available. There are regular events to give visitors a good appreciation of Bavarian culture eg. Tyroler evenings, Town band shows and many more.Visit the Mittenwald/Karwendel website for more information.

Mttenwald is far enough off the beaten path that it doesn't get overwhelmed by the visitors you find in some of the more "popular" tourist destinations in the region. It has maintained it's traditions and certainly it's charm. There isn't a trip to Bavaria without a visit to Mittenwald, no matter the time of year!

Mittenwald is a lovely town to stay in on a trip to the Alps. The altstadt has beautiful painted buildings and great views of the Alps. I would highly recommend it. The painted church is particularly nice.

My daytrips in Germany tourbook led me to believe this town was all about violins but the Altstadt was more impressive to me for the murals and pedestrian friendly streets. Quite naturally if you are here, just MUST visit the Altstadt. FYI, the folks at the tourism office were extremely friendly, helpful and provided maps in English.
