The Karwendelbahn is approximately 20 minutes walk from the centre of Mittenwald. It is very busy at peak times and as it is quite a small cable car (40 people I think!) you may have to queue to get on. The wait is definitely worth it. The ride is not for the faint hearted though! At the top there is a visitor centre and a few well laid out paths, some with wire ropes to help you to the summits. It is possible to walk back down to Mittenwald after passing through the tunnel at the top. It is a very difficult descent, and may have snowy areas even in July. The path down is extremely steep in some areas and is covered with scree, so great caution is required. There is an alpine hut on the way down though, if refreshments are required!
