We have stayed here more times than I can count and in all seasons. It has become a firm favorite with my husband and myself. Punzenlehen is located up a steeply winding road just outside Berchtesgaden in Engeday, which is not far outside the town, but you really do need a car to get there. If you go in winter you need at least winter tyres (required by law between November and April), and 4x4 helps as well but is not entirely necessary as the road is ploughed 3-4 times a day during bad snowfall. There are covered parking bays for each appartment.
There are four appartments at Punzenlehen which cater for families and couples, three of them have balconies and The Untersberg has a part covered garden room. As you are quite high up here the views are stunning and the peace and quiet is lovely. All the appartments are well equipped with all the things you would expect, hairdryer, towels, bathrobes, dishwasher, coffee machine, TV and access to the internet. The Untersberg and Watzmann have smaller kitchens with hobs but NO ovens, but a Combi-Microwave can be put in the appartment on request. The Untersberg is great for children as there is a mezzanine floor where they can sleep and play. The rule on pets is limited as these appartments are essentially an allergy-free zone but the Watzmann can be an exception and it also exits out onto the field at the back of the property.
Assuming you have come by car you can drive to so many local attractions from here, and we have toured around a lot of the area. Salzburg is not too far off either (half an hour by car) and here are some fantastic shopping outlet stores plus of course Salzburg. There is some fantastic walking and if you are a skiier some great runs locally, which are reasonably priced to use (a points system). There are also two wonderful Therme swimming pools, one in Berchtesgaden and one in Bad Reichenhall, which are worth a day out on their own. Even in the winter we are never bored and if the weather is sunny a trip up the Jenner is recommended for the views alone, and a bowl of their delicious Goulash Soup sat out on a snowy terrace.
The owners of Punzenlehen, Fiona and Christoph Lochner, have made us feel almost like family and you always feel at ease - and at home - here. We are already planning our next break just after Christmas. This place has been a "little gem of a find" for us and I can thoroughly recommend a stay here.
