Walking boots, picnic and many hours to explore this spectacular gorge - words can not describe the wonder of this place, the power of the water, the tranqulity of the surroundings - some path ways are slippy and involve holding on to a rope on narrow wak ways - but i would definately return again and again - the water is so pure it is the best drinking water I have ever tasted. Be prepared to spend the whole day, earlier the better as it can get quite warm (June 2012) - great pub at the end, near the entrance - fab beers and icecream desserts,

Some stunning scenery on a well-built trail, leading to some excellent places for a stop to eat or simply a picnic

There are multiple entrances to the gorge. We entered through the entrance near the town of Marktschellenberg. The entrance was unassuming, but that changed very quickly once we came into view of the gorge and the water fall. You feel like you are in one of the Indiana Jones movies. The well constructed trail traces the narrow of the gorge and goes on for many kms. The views of the gorge are probably more impressive (steeper, narrower) near the beginning of the trail, but if you press on, you continue to see very nice views of the river and the gorge.

Paid a pittance for entry and it is well kept. The bottom part is the most dramatic. There is an additional climb to see a church but we continued right on up past the waterfall and walked down to Maria Gern. More than enough!

There is a big car park, about five minutes walk from the gorge, but this gets filled up quickly as there are lots of walks in the area. You have to buy a token two euros from a machine a few minutes walk before you enter the gorge. The Gorge itself is beautiful area and worth going to see even if you don't have much time. At the end of the gorge, you can go through a turnstile that does not let you back the same way, but if you do go through the turnstile you can carry on walking, through the forest area, which is also beautiful, a slight incline there is a cafe/bar after a couple of miles.

On your way back, there is an alternative route back to the car park, which at a higher level than walking through the gorge. Although it obviously wasn't possible, it would have been nicer to end the walk at the gorge instead start of the gorge, but at least if you don't have much time you can have a quick visit there. Would recommend.
