This was a fun and fascinating tour to take. The salt mines are a true wonder to go through, and the way the tour is set up is really well done. It is a lot of fun to go through, and you can see why the mines have lasted as long as they have. It is a wonder t be that far underground, and still feel safe - but you cannot tell how deep you are at all. Definitely worth the the time to see!

We decided to do this and we weren't disappointed. It won't blow you away but it is a very nice tour in a mine which you don't do everyday. They do a good job of taking you around and there is a little bit of explanation but the big thing is being that deep underground and the slides you ride down to get your picture taken. You pay for parking and walk over to the mines. Staff are not overly friendly. Bring student IDs if you have them for a discount.

We did this tour after it was recommended to us by multiple people. Maybe we went on an off day but it just wasn't that great. We were down there almost three hours because the train broke down and it felt like we were wasting our time and could have been seeing other things. Parts were fun like wearing the fun outfits and going down the slides, but I think there are many more interesting things to see/do in the area.

We've been travelling for about 6 months straight and one of the side-effects is that my husband is starting to get a bit blase about most of the attractions we visit (because, well, seen one Botticelli, seen them all...) However, we had a couple extra days in Salzburg after seeing all the "must-sees". We chose to visit the Salt Mines instead of spending another afternoon watching the grizzled old men play chess in Kapitelplatz. A 45-min bus ride (get the all day pass for about 9 Euro, get on nearby the Hautbahnhof...ask the info desk there for the exact directions to get to the bus stop) on bus 840 to the "Salzbergwerk" stop will get you right to the entrance of the car park. It was a bit expensive (for us) and we had to wait around about an hour until the next tour, but I suggest walking around. There's a small trail nearby the main entrance where you buy tickets (you can't miss it) and if you climb up that you'll see a doorway with 3 figures standing next to it. It's a long (cold!) tunnel. Random, but it certainly passes the time.

My husband and I both enjoyed the actual tour quite a lot. We got audio guides since the tour guide spoke only in German, but it's timed really well that you'll get all the information at the same time. The first part is a train ride which goes just fast enough to give us a little thrill. You should've seen how excited my husband got when he realized we were going to slide down the mine chute. The mirror lake is gorgeous (sit on the right side for the best show). And, I have to say that it was highly entertaining & educational for a tour about mining (which isn't the most interesting of subjects). We enjoyed the salt mines the most out of our stay in Salzburg.

Afterwards, we got on the bus again at the same stop to go into the city center of Berchtesgaden (all buses at the stop go to the city center). Watch for the times heading back to Salzburg. Only 840 goes from Berchtesgaden city center to Salzburg & the last bus was at 4:15pm. If you want to go into the city, I suggest going early to the salt mines (11am-ish) because we only had about 45 min to wander around the city afterwards before we had to catch the last bus back. We went to the info center within the city (you'll see it right across the street from the bus station), and got a free map.

All in all, a really fun day trip. Well worth the time and effort (and this coming from a person who's quite a lazy traveler).

Half hour on bus from salzburg and just inside germany but well worth a visit. Dont bother with expensive tour groups from salzburg as bus tickets were €9 for open return bus tickets for the day and gives you rest of day to visit surrounding area. Bus stops just across road from mine at stop salzbergwerk. Tour itself only had about 10 people due to being march but this kept the feel of being stuck in an organised tour right out of it. Audio guides are provided as tour is in german and once you get used to where these activate they work fine. Great experience with various light shows and films to learn how white gold is extracted. Slides are a must but steps are available for the faint hearted ;). The mirror lake is amazing and has to be seen. Live feeds from other parts of mine in operation are shown at various points. Only downside is no photos are allowed but may be possible with a camera phone.....
Cafe across road serves great goulash soup
